"Found" shot gun shells

Post by rsj223 » 30 Apr 2017, 11:48 pm

Found about 40 unused 12g shells today question is what to do with them?
I was thinking on pulling them apart or should they just go to the police station for disposal?

I'd say that's someone dumping ammo they don't want to be caught with, I'd turn em in

I'd grab the shottie and a bunch of plastic drink bottles, some water with food dye, and have a blast! Literally.

If not too rusty I would just use them. Perhaps spray them with linox to slow the rust until you have a chance to fire them.

"Turn in" ammo to the police?

Just leave them there. It's not your garbage, not your responsibility to pick them up. If some douche threw them out his window and they where in my front yard I would throw them in the garbage. They are not going to blowup and kill the trash man. I got like 10x that rolling around the floor of my garage. I would only pick it up in my front yard because it is unsightly and I don't want to dull my mower blades. Same as a dozen short pieces of rebar or concrete samples.

If it is only surface rust should be OK to use.

I will be at the shot show if your going.
Might try a few with the .22.
They were in a very damp place some have pitted and others would be ok and there is about 50 of them.

Test fire 3 or 4 of the worst. (at distance) Ammo is surprisingly robust and resistant to moisture. A couple look rooted but most I think would still be serviceable. Or as bentaz said, dismantle & reclaim what you can.

In Australia the legalities are very different. I could loose all my guns and license plus a fine or Jail if I had a single loose live .22 round in the tray of my ute and got stopped by the Police.
Personally I'd be turning them in rather than shooting them, might be someones bad reloads....

They are too far gone dig a hole and bury them.Do not involve the police unless you wish to be treated like a criminal [possibly depends who you get]

In Victoria I've handed in quite a few shells and cartridges that were found when helping a friend move (Her ex had left behind them years previously). No issues at all, didn't even get asked for ID. I've also been in a couple of gun shops when people have handed over old ammo.

I might pull the worst looking one apart and see from the inside.

I found a large amount of Explosives and detonators near the roadhouse where I worked in the North West and the police were notified and they sent a swat team in choppers and interveiwed us all seperately till the boss lost it and threw them all out.We were being treated as if we were part of a terrorist plot

Yeah, this is strange to Yanks. That you would find some ammo and think, "I gotta take this to the police." I think I understand, it is regulated or something down under.

I think my buddy's dog has eaten more ammo than is in that pic. Mostly .22s, though.

You got it mate, people without a firearms license can't buy and/or possess any live ammunition outside of a range in Aus. The idea being that the gangbangers can't get access to ammo for their illegal guns.. i dunno how much you get over there in terms of aussie news but its not working, apparently now theres so much that it just gets chucked all over the street

Any fisherman knows that one rusty hook will soon put the cancer through your entire tacklebox. I sure as hell wouldn't put them near any gun i wanted to keep!!!
