Decision: Arisaka or a Mauser? Discuss...

Post by juststarting » 24 Sep 2017, 7:42 pm

Alrighty, so it's time to waste some money... I like old milsurps, as some of you may have guessed by now. That said, an old rifle is just that, an old rifle. If I wanted something modern, I often do, I'd get that... But in this case, we're talking milsurps, I really like their history/historical significance or just all around weirdness or one of engineering. Anyway, with that in mind, I'm considering a German Mauser (Russian capture) or an Arisaka (that I really enjoyed shooting). Both is currently not an option, yet :violin: , so I am leaning towards a K98.

If the Arisaka is 6.5mm I'd grab it. If it's 7.7mm I'd grab the Mauser and get the Arisaka later.
I like both but I seem to have a thing for the 6.5mm rounds :-)
My dealer built a .257 Roberts on an Arisaka 7.7mm action.

Is the Arisaka in good order? Shoot well? Does it have the Chrysanthemum? If yes, then buy the Arisaka as good ones are not that common whereas K98k's are very common. Cheers.

Get the Arisaka, is it 7.7 or 6.5?
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

Mausers are certainly easier to source. An Arisaka is certainly more interesting.
I would keep an eye out for an Arisaka, if one doesn't pop up, get a Mauser for the time being. I'm in the same boat with a K31. Probably get a lithy .303 while the search for a K31 continues.

Or get a Henry........ :)

Having plane lead sites on an Arisaka is a requirement. I want those!

Undecided. I am pretty good at hunting these things down...

Few people mentioned it, why is it a big factor?

I'd get a Henry, but I spent that budget on K11 and K31 carbines.

I recon get either or both as you can, I find it refreshing that there are people out there that want these rifles, means they will be around for a while longer

Can't agree brass for the 6.5 Jap is hard to find. Plenty in Qld, but is not cheap at $120/100. It also may be made from 30/06 or 270Win parent cases. Personally, I wouldn't discriminate between a T38 or a T99, if they were in good order with intact Chrysanthemum. Wire bipod and aircraft sights would be a nice addition, but so would a T97, one of which I know of for sale. Any of these would be first choice if funds were currently limited as I said before, K98k's, in good to very good nick, are always readily available. Cheers.
(I'm hoping to cadge a loan of the T97 next week, and con the Mrs into wanting it without asking "How much?")

G'day juststarting,
360noscope simply said he bought a Steyr in 8x50R (M1888 straight pull, and early issue M95 straight pull) simply because! A good reason if ever there was one! Also the seller had an Arisaka that he intends to return and purchase. I have to confess to also being somewhat of an impulse buyer, which is why next months auction is a bit nerve wracking for my wallet.

G'day 360noscope,
Are you sure the Steyr is still chambered for the 8x50 and has not undergone the M30/M31 update? May pay to check the chamber with a dummy round, or perhaps take a cast to be sure, Cheers.

I just got confused by the seemingly arbitrary "there".

As for impulsive buying, there's no such thing. You need a genuine reason, so there is a reason, which is obviously not impulsive at that stage. That's how it is, I don't want to hear anything else on this matter lol

Ive never seen an Arisaka in the flesh let alone shot one, but pretty safe bet the Mauser will be better!
That being said, I love k98's and I desire one myself, they are overpriced though considering how many of the blooming things were made!
What about an M96 Swedish Mauser like i recently picked up for $295?
I do really want a k98 and I will buy one, but if i was only planning on owning only one Mauser, id probbably go the Swede!

I don't think 'better' is really a factor. I mean, they are all old neglected rifles that seen better days. Anything modern is usually better and cheaper. So saying one heap of wood and steel is better than another, functionally speaking means nothing to me. I have both ends of the spectrum and I value for example an old battle worn 91/30 above my K31... Heathen, I hear you say, but old guns, their history and perceived feeling of fun to shoot, which is different for everyone, means a lot more to me than a smooth bolt. I am more interested in its history, usage and engineering path someone took to get there. "Better" is subjective. Swedish Mauser is pretty neat, I'd like one, but it's not on my top 5 to get list. Possibly around number 7 :)
