Feedback request - Replies and pagination

Post by Aster » 03 Oct 2017, 2:47 pm

I'm curious as to peoples feedback on the number of replies we have per page in topics.

As everyone will understand, when replies run into the dozens, and sometimes hundreds, it becomes impractical to have an entire topic on a single page. The problem is particularly pronounced on mobiles where too much content means long loads times and what can feel like endless scrolling, so pagination is required.

On the other hand you don't want to have too little content per page and excessive navigation.

( I don't know about you folk but when a website publishes a 'The 10 most blankiest blanks you'll ever see' type article and you have to click through ten different pages to see the photos one at a time it does my head in; to the point that once I see this I won't visit the site again. )

There is no exact science to pagination, it's really a case of what works best for each site and the typical amount of content in each topic.

Recently I've been wondering if perhaps we have a few too many replies per page, and if people would prefer a slightly more manageable amount of content per page and the quicker load times offered by reducing the number of replies.

At the moment we show 18 post per page (that's the initial topic and 17 replies).

No real right or wrong answers here, what do people think? How many post per page in topics feels right to you?

Same question for number of topics shown when navigating forum categories too (e.g. Rifles, shotguns and other longarms). This is a little different to the above as each topic link is only a single line so you can reasonably have many more per page. At the moment we are showing 35 topics per forum page.

If anyone with feedback could reply with something the following, it would be appreciated.

Post per topic page: 18
Topics per forum page: 35
Explanation: xyz

Cheers.
See you on the firing line.

Personal preference - I hate pages. I prefer one big list.

Post per topic page: 25
Topics per forum page: 35
Explanation: As above.

I don't use a smart phone.

I prefer one long page rather than having to skip through pages. On another forum I'm on we can choose in our User Settings how many items we want to see per page.

I thought for mobile the pages are actually coded differently from the rest of us automatically?

Agree. Suggest
Post per topic page: 15
Topics per forum page: 30
Explanation: agree.
Can I please add. To further improve, add the black menu at the top of the page to the bottom of each page too. Or a link at the bottom to the top of the page. Directly under the reply button.
Think l suggested this some time ago.

PS. Thanks for asking.

EDIT, Or perhaps the "jump to" box have a couple of additional options added. e. g. The 5 in the black menu.

User set.. other forums I'm a member of permit me to pick the number of replies displayed per page.

It doesn't bother me particularly, but i find the current settings completely fine, and i personally don't like continuous loading pages, but that may be due to the connection i have... damn satellite

I only use a mobile phone and don't own a pc.

I think the number of replies per page is just right.

Agreed - even when viewing on my phone - I prefer to scroll to see additional information rather than have to keep clicking on more links.

If I had it my way and it was customisable - I'd expand it to the maximum number of posts per page, but that's me. ;)

I've never even considered it on this group. Meaning that what you have isn't irritating in any way, so as far as I'm concerned, you've got it right.

Post per topic page: minimum 18

Topics per forum page: minimum 35

Explanation:
* i use a smart phone & prefer to scroll to see prevoius post as loading other pages takes longer.

* a 'top of page' button at the bottom of the page would be good-particularly if posts per page are increased.

* overall not unhappy with how it works presently.

* because people who find the taste of banana skin unpleasant & dont like the dry sensation it leaves in their mouth should refrain from eating them.

I hear you OB

I understand we are a family friendly forum, But perhaps a WAYNE KERR emoji would fit the bill... EG.... An emoji with one arm way bigger than the other may be discrete enough to achieve the objective ? perhaps :D

Anyone around here make these emoji's up ????

If it fitted the bill, it may be a possibility ? ... What say you Aster and the boys ?

I would like something similar to a "like" button so I can show appreciation for a rifle photo etc. Without having to actually type something. I'm sure people like to know their efforts at contributing are appreciated.

In other forums which I frequent I've seen a a per-thread "all" option. E.g. [1] [2] [3] [all]. If such an [all] worked in conjunction with the search.php?search_id=unreadposts I think that would be great. I often view on a mobile using the "unread posts" link at the top of the forum. When I've been away for a few days and there are multiple pages of catch-up reading to do, I find navigating to the subsequent pages using the [1] [2] [3] at the bottom of the page a bit fiddly on the small screen. Clicking an [all] which jumps me to the first unread post for that thread and loads the whole thread would be great. Page load time is less of a concern than loading multiple pages to get through the thread.

I also find the "View first unread post" icon (small one to the immediate left of the thread title) a bit small. I have to zoom in so my fat fingers don't accidentally/inaccurately click the thread title. Making that icon a bit bigger would be appreciated.

As per others' sentiments, thank you for this wonderful forum. I don't post much, but I've learned heaps for the collective wisdom, and get a great giggle out of the group dynamics. You're all great characters!

I have to admit mate, I'm kind of anti-emoji as they've long since gotten out of control IMO.

There are currently 2,666 official emojis

They're just creating them for the sake of themselves now

A minimal, useful collection is the way IMO. In general I'd say that I'd have to be convinced a particular emoji was more useful than just token if I was to add it.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback.

I won't address it all point by point, but everything has been read and is being taken into consideration.

Seems I was a bit off the mark in my assumptions. I'll do a little more evaluation on the numbers and other options like an 'all' link etc. and see what might work.

I'll give the icon sizes for mobile a once over as well.
See you on the firing line.

Fair call Aster..

So when will we see the "pat on the admins backs emoticon" appear mate ? :P I'm convinced that one would be considered useful by most of the members and get plenty of use around here..
