Your shooting year in reveiw

Post by Noisydad » 31 Dec 2017, 9:45 am

Well that's another trip around the sun done at 67,000 miles per hour and no one fell off!
How did your shooting year go? I've not had time for hunting again (really need to do something about that) but I did adopt and re home 4 rescue guns.
I did have a great year in competition target shooting though where I managed 44 podium finishes (and missed a comp too) which is up from 38 last year and comprised of 11 x 1st place, 19 x 2nd place, 14 x 3 rd place and have risen from 5th in the club muzzle loading championship to 2nd.
I've even lured 2 more unsuspecting victims to "the dark side" of shooting.
This year as near as I can count (It would actually be more than this) I fired 1634 shots from 8 of my shootin irons comprising of;
.44-40 x 392
.50-70 x 337
.40-65 x 244
.45 FL x 60
.54 ML x 342
.58 ML x 114
.32 x 95
12g x 50
Every lump of lead was cast by me and every shot was black powder powered.
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

Thats a very impressive resume for the year Noisydad well done. A good effort in attending that many comps as well. I am sure it involved a bit of traveling and real commitment. The guys at the top always have that real commitment, many fail to understand the time, effort and money many sink into being the best they can be.
Also a great feeling when you can add some new members the sports all need that. Most if not all the shooting sports clubs are on the brink of being un financial or just plain not enough members to be a club.

There is travel involved - 97km each way to our range for me but we have members that travel 4 hours each way EVERY month!
I figured that since I'm going the cost and effort to drive to the range each month I may as well compete in as many events as I can so I bought rifles for each of the events on offer. Still more gear to get for more events though.

Your lucky if your club has all those comps. My club is about 120km away and its either there each week or another club normally further. Home and away type thing then there are the open comps which I tend to set a limit on of 3 hours travel each way as max. But if there is a real good reason as in meeting with someone I go further.

Ha, well, let me ponder here. Shot, I don't even know, but would be well over a thousand centrefires and another thousand or so of 22LR. I know, because I had to restock on everything and for the last three days, on and off, I've been doing brass prep.

I have given a loving home to 5 new children (pretty sure I'm forgetting about a couple) and currently waiting for my probationary Cat H licence to arrive. So I suspect that the next boom stick may be either something along those lines or a 50BMG (Brett, you are responsible for this). I loved 416, but I just felt like it wasn't abusing me enough. Time to start saving.

My reloading software had been selling, which is fantastic, because it's something I love doing.

I hunt qute a bit. This year however been a bit dry though, no deer pie. I walked up to a couple of animals, within throwing distance, but for one reason or another I didn't or couldn't take a shot. And I even took a shot and missed one. But the fact that I can sneek up on one now, makes me think I know enough to be a little dangerous.

Next year, black powder is on the agenda :)

Reload most apart from rimfire last year was 16772 we should all keep a count in case we have to justify ammo at home I don,t have time yet for black powder one day maybe and i have only put 50 or so in 17HMR the flagon dragon shoots that most times

Well, been a bit of a strange year in regards to firearms this year for me, shot a bunch of guns really just at inanimate objects apart from a few pests, fired guns and calibers i'll probably never get to fire again in my life, met a few guys off the forum who i now consider friends, adopted a shotty off ole' mate Bentaz, and then i got into the big bangers the one and only .177 air rifle, wrecked my .303 by putting it through a car window and had the pleasure of dealing with the absoloute butchers in the Melbourne gun shops, hears to another year fellas :drinks:

I’ve not been keeping complete records but would guess about
2-300 rounds each for my 303. 6.5x55, 7.5x55, 7.62x54r and 45-70 black powder,
2-3000 22lr,
5-600 223,
4-500 308,
few slabs of 12ga.
100 or so each for the 45 and 58cal muzzle loaders.
50-100 577 snider,
50-60 375h&h.
3-400 357 mag

I've done bugger all for the last 6 months. Too busy spending money and doing work to the property/business.

Did do quite a bit of work as exec for Sheffield Rifle Club. Started up an fclass hunter division to give folks an entry point into long range shooting. No fancy target rifles allowed. Shooting at 300yd off field bipods or basic rests. It's been quite popular and attracted new members. We shoot that before the regular fclass and TR shoot. Makes an even playing field for new comers who can do better than some experienced target shooters once you take all their specialised gear off them.
Our second annual ANZAC shoot went well with some great prizes and everyone having a good time.
Instituted a one day championship for the club on top of our yearly aggregate championship and again, a great perpetual trophy made by our secretary who is quite an accomplished sculpter.

Did a few culls but not enough because the hoppy sheep are still eating far more than the woolly ones.

Looking forward to freeing up some time and money to do a bit more in the new year.

Not much from me, maybe 500 rounds of .22LR and about 50 of .22 WMR.
Looking at Xmas and those foxes I couldn't get due to the range restriction of the .22 Mag, I've decided in 2018 that I'll go ahead and get that Tikka T3X in .243 I've been eyeing for a while now.
It'll shoot the fleas off a dog's back at five hundred yards, Tannen, and it's pointed straight at your head!

222
223
243
7x57
7-08
6.5x55
270
3006
22hornet & a

Boooooring for me. Illness in the family has prevented me doing a great deal and cancelled two deer hunting trips as a result. :(
Few dozen rabbits and 4 or 5 foxes. :(

Plink fest was great too. I will be more prepared for that next year.

Developed slug loads for 12g too. Great result for that.

Not quite correct. Try googling meds soot. But it does depend on the dosage.

Ummm.... is there a thread where the reason for this is explained?
It would be a great story!

A few slabs of 12g for me.
Coupla hundred .22lr
Maybe 100 223
8 308 :unknown:

No hunting anything for me. Would like to, not really sure how to start (or find the time).
I’d like to think that in 2018 I’d be able to change that. And purchase a scope or 2 and a rifle or 2!!

I’m feeling like a hack after reading the posts in this thread

Took ownership of a nice WW1 germam mauser (and my first milsurp) last year which was close to a highlight, yet to shoot her.

My poor little .22 saw less than 50 rounds and a couple bunnies, I didnt do much shooting for fun but put a lot of time in the field hunting so as a result my 300wm got carried around on 9 trips and around 20 days for 2 shots and 2 deer so wont argue too much with those numbers except I would have liked to have spent some range time for the longer shots.

Shot clays a couple times, went up to the rice twice and had my first Vic duck opening and one trip during the season, plenty of ducks hit the water.

On reflection having spent 25% of my weekends away hunting last year (not too mention all the fishing trips) I gotta say I have a pretty good missus!
