Possible to shoot a button into being pressed?

Post by Ariat » 01 Jan 2014, 3:11 pm

Ok, so a bit of stupid movie thinking here...

If you've seen the movie 'unstoppable' with Denzel Washington you might remember there is a scene in it where the cops attempt to shoot a button that's supposed to cut the fuel or something.

Accuracy side, does anyone think it would be possible to actually shoot a button into being pressed? Obviously the button would still be destroyed after, but just for the sake of pressing it only, reckon it's possible?

There's my stupid question for the week out of the way :D

Yes so long as the button isn't destroyed in the process.

Seriously though, maybe with a 22LR if you had a really robust button?

Still smash the button for sure but if it can hold up to it for long enough to press the other end I think so.

For any centre fire calibre though I reckon the button would likely be destroyed and the bullet all the way through it before it was 'pressed'.

I reckon that's right.

You see in just about every slow-motion shooting video the bullet has gone through the target before the target starts to move.

It would depend on how little contact the received or whatever it's called in the rear of the button needs to work I guess? Before everything blows apart.

22 would be your only option for a consistent chance at doing it I would think?

I know the scene in Unstoppable your referencing.

The button is about 2cm big on the train which is going past at 75mph and 10 cops unload a full auto clip each
