Camel hunting in NT

Post by brisb » 26 Sep 2013, 9:03 am

I was reading some other shooting related stuff recently and came across stuff on camel hunting in Australia, and how there are some big camel culls on on the Northern Territory and some nearby areas.

I get hunting foxes because they obviously kill the native wildlife, same for shooting feral cats etc.

I guess I was a bit surprised to hear camels are problem in the deserts of the Northern Territory? Wouldn't have though a few camels rolling round up there would be problem that would call for organised culls?

Are they a declared pest then, or is this a 'permit' type deal?

Educate me folks?

Same as any other introduced species... They muck up the balance by eating all the vegetation and there's less food for natives species.

An introduced species in a "fragile ecosystem" and all that I suppose.

They're introduced from India I'm pretty sure... Not native to Australia.

There is a company that does it as a carbon offset these days too.

Like paying a little extra that's donated to planting trees or whatever, except they shoot camels...

You're probably right, can't say I find camel all that appealing as a meal though...

It's not bad apparently (not that I've tried it)

I vaguely remember reading a few things a while ago were people were pushing camel has food. A few news articles and such...

Cull the pests while feeding the people, win win.

Quoting a bit of wikipedia here:

"Degradation of the environment occurs when densities exceed two animals per square kilometre"

A patch of desert doesn't go too far obviously...

Camels are a big environmental problem and the numbers have become out of control in some parts other than culling them they all so get rounded up for live export back to the Middle East manly for breeding because of there clean blood lines I’ve heard and meat market.
They say the meats not to bad and is quite expensive in butcher shops in Sydney and is considered quite healthy the meat is harvested from the wild ones in the north
The meat it self don’t look to bad can’t say I’ve tried it the size of animal and it’s ability to survive on little water and food I would of thought it would of been like old boots
Anyone tried it be interesting to know what it was like

Saw a documentary on this a few years back...yes camels are a huge problem, not only because they eat and drink what little there is, but also destroy the equipment of cattle farmers.
And there's over a million of them running around. Australia seems to be a haven for invasive species....of all sorts.

Once, years ago at the revolving restaurant in Centrepoint Tower, which is more of a wank than a cullinary hot spot.

Not bad, but didn't really blow my hair back, however that description followed for about everything else we had that night.

More similar to beef than anything... Think camel is to beef, as goat is to lamb. I reckon you could do good things with it if you knew what you were doing.

I had a fine grind camel burger years ago, was edible enough but not memorable.

My brother was lucky enough to do a bit of camel culling with a heli year ago. Round em up and run em a bit til they mob up nice and tight then a flat hard hitting 180gr out of a 300 wsm was good medicine

Darwin Airport sells camel jerky. Not as good as turkey jerky but better than crocodile jerky.
