1.Paying a FAL meant once go to your local cop shop and pay it..
2.Then some number cruncher decided that FAL could be paid through Australia Post. to take the load off the police stations.
3.Recently we were told that the Post office no longer does FAL renewals.
4.all FAL renewals were to be paid directly to the licensing branch.
5. Now, that too is undone as the new news is to pay FAL via the dept of transport.

That's where we do it in Vic. Submit the renewal online, letter comes six weeks later in the post, go into VicRoads for the photo, go home, pay online, card comes in the mail two weeks later. $309.50 for five years for CatA/B (CatH is $225.80 for three years). Mine expired Monday before last. I did the renewal mid February, letter came on Monday, a week after expiry. Expiry doesn't matter as long as you have lodged the renewal application, but dealers won't sell you ammo or firearms until you get your new card. They did approve a permit for me this week while I was expired though, which was a surprise. Just waiting on the card so I can pick it up now.

Queensland has 10 year licences for category A and B only. All other categories are 5 year. I think the 10 year licence current price is $450.

Just apply and pay on the police website and get your photo taken at the post office.

Ive said for years that it should be administered by the department of transport. WA DOT have one of the better online portals compared to some other government departments, and they clearly have robust systems in place for managing the administration of licensing.

Regardless of the actual substance or content of the licence, Transport are far and away the experts at running a licensing system when compared to the cops.
