Recreational Shooting WA

Post by sseeker » 05 Apr 2015, 1:22 am

Hi all,

I'm an avid shooter from Perth, WA who's after some information on recreational shooting in WA. The legislation in WA stipulates that you can shoot recreational (other than category H) if you have permission from a land owner. I'm going to assume this letter of permission has to accompany your firearm licence application? So pretty much there's no way to shoot "for fun" unless you know the owner of a large property?

On another note - I'm currently shooting category H at an indoor range however the range is short and environment is cramped and hot. Could anyone recommend perhaps larger indoor ranges/an outdoor range? Distance around the metro area doesn't bother me. Very keen to settle into a comfortable club.

Sorry for my lack of terminology, understanding etc... I'm still trying to wrap my head around the rules and regulations! :?

Here's a list for you. Choice of club depends on what type of matches you want to shoot.

About the letter and licensing, this is from WA Police website for you :)

Do I have to provide a letter from a property owner giving me permission to shoot on their property?

Yes, a recreational shooter under Section 11A(2)(c) of the Firearms Act 1973 requires written permission from a property owner to satisfy the genuine reason for an applicant to use a firearm for hunting or recreational shooting.
If the applicant is the owner of a suitable property for the category of firearm being sought then the property letter is not required; however further evidence will be requested to verify details provided.
