Thoughts on gun safe inspection frequency

Post by nords » 14 Feb 2014, 11:00 am

Wondering what peoples thoughts are on the frequency of the gun safe inspections we have to do here in Aus.

I know peoples experiences will be a bit all over the place with this, some of you guys have mentioned in the past you've had 1 inspection in years, or never. I've read others getting done 3-4 times in a year.

4 times in a year is asking a bit much I reckon. All for initial inspections or whatever. A reasonable practice to ensure people are keeping up their end of the deal, but 4 times is started to stink a little of harassment...

Thoughts?

I've had 7 since it was enforced, I've never had my safe checked only serial numbers. I can't see it as any issue

I've been told by VIC firearms registry inspections are done at random. Apparently their system just gives them 8 names each day and that's who they go see.

Split that by however many license holders there are.... 10's of thousands I guess? I dunno how many...

No surprise some people never seem to get inspection, bad luck or your just close to the cop station if you get lots

IMO one to confirm everything is correct should be plenty.

If you've gone to the effort of getting everything installed and secured properly you're not going to undo it all for fun after the first inspection are you.

One on changing address is also probably fair enough.

Once it is passed I see no need for future inspections unless details are changed.

Agree with the above.

My safe is over the 150kg mark to not require bolting down, so there is no concern over it's 'proper fixtures' coming lose over time or anything like that. Unless the legislation changes on the weight limit it will always be a passing setup so there is no need to re-inspect as it is.

As it happens my safe is bolted down anyway. Difficult location, house is alarmed and all the other jazz too making it even less necessary.

My last inspection took all of 5 minutes, didn't really bother me but it's a waste of the officers time to redo again if my name comes up.

I dropped into the local station the other day and asked about inspections. The nice lady cop clearly thought it's a waste of their time but told me there are no random visits, (further waste of time). They call ahead to check that you'll be home first. A young bloke near here lost the lot because he hadn't bothered to bolt it all down. If you've complied they won't complain.

I find it all intrusive. I have nothing to worry about though as I meet the legislation of safe gun keeping but I still find it intrusive, I just dislike the thought of anyone looking into my stuff let alone my guns. But if I must do it and I have a choice I think once to ensure that I comply is enough.

I've had one since 2006, and have moved house since then. Last year here in SW of WA majority of lic firearms owners got a letter stating that they would get an inspections within 14 days of date on letter. I got the letter - they never showed - although I know they checked a safe at a house only 3 doors away. Spoke to several others who got the letter - some had an inspection some got a no show. Personally I wouldn't mind every few years, or upon moving house, I consider that fair, I have nothing to hide, as long as they can work around peoples work hrs.

Being a bit dramatic with 7 aren't we :P

That's not happening to anyone.

Where you draw the line is personal opinion but I agree too many is intrusive. One initial once is probably fair enough.

If they must do it regularly 5 years apart? Something like that.... It's pointless doing it too regularly.

How about on license renewal?
Kill 2 birds with one stone.
Instead of having to go to a photopiont (in Vic) Mr Plod fronts up with a camera a list of your registered firearms checks that "their" records are up to date and takes a selfy with you :D Guaranteed your you, no need to "Attach: 100 points of certified identification documents here"
There's always room for at least one more gun in my safe.

Not a bad idea above.

Once every 5 years, not too invasive.

Wouldn't be any more work for the cops over their random ones anyway.

Once only, when applying for your licence. Any subsequent inspections only proves the inadequacies of the registries, or the lack of faith in the registries by the authorities themselves!

I reckon they could probably just go through licensees A-Z.

Everyone would get an inspection but would keep it years apart. No random chance to it.

If the list is short in an area have a minimum period between checks for 5 years or something.
