No black powder in WA? Effects of WA vs SA laws

Post by ChrisPer » 08 Mar 2021, 11:44 am

At Perth Muzzle Loaders Club we are getting very very low on black powder. It hasn't been freely available for maybe five or seven years with only occasional access until maybe a year ago.

Now there is none in WA and no likelihood of change.

There is plenty in South Australia and a huge supply in Victoria, industry sources tell me. The problem is apparently in road transport regulations and perhaps no cheaply accessible local magazines able to store a commercial amount. Us users are limited to 4Kg to store or transport.

I haven't seen 4Kg in one place in years.

Our competition rules for State and National Championships require actual black powder, not substitutes. Pyrodex is acceptable for weekly competition, but we can't get that because of the ordinary powder shortages.

Anyone got any insights or helpful information?

I reckon your best bet is flee from there in a shipping container or hang on under a truck or hide in the wheel well of a aeroplane and claim political asylum in the eastern states.
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

Sorry to hear about the situation. I understand normal powder is also problematic to source there as well.

There is isn’t an easy answer, Mcgowenstan is increasingly an isolated and insular as well as being ever more intolerant place for the legitimate shooting sports.

Noisydad pretty much suggested what I would recommend. Otherwise get a boat/yacht and sail to SA for a shopping trip. Also, make sure everyone that enjoys shooting there is a member of Shooters, Fishers, Farmers Party.

On the topic of blackpowder/muzzleloading in WA, I've recently been told that hunting with a muzzleloader is illegal over there, does anyone know if thats true? A cursory search on Google has left me none the wiser at this point in time...

Re' making your own.

I don’t know whether or not you’ve seen any of these YouTube videos, but they are quite interesting. The guy has an “interesting” sense of humour.

This first video seems to be out of sequence – it’s just how his library presents them.

I found this guy a while back and he did his own black last year. I like the way he gets his kids involved in this old school stuff, it's a fun channel.

But, yes, don't do it in Australia.
