Now they want to ban us Hunting in South Africa

Post by MeccaOz » 10 Jul 2014, 2:26 am

The Federal Government is planning to ask South Africa to ban Australians from taking part in 'canned' trophy hunting in that country.

Environment Minister Greg Hunt revealed the Government's intentions just days after the importation of rhino body part trophies was outlawed.

Many of the trophies come from so-called 'canned hunts', where animals including lions and zebras are bred and farmed for the sole purpose of being killed in mock enclosed hunts.

Domestic political opposition to the practice has been led by Victorian Liberal backbencher Jason Wood, who has successfully lobbied the Government into cracking down on trophy imports.

The Government is investigating how to extend the import ban to African lion body parts.

Mr Hunt says he is planning to write to the South African government to prevent Australians who travel there from taking part in canned hunts, which he describes as "sick and wrong".

"We can't stop the practice in Africa or elsewhere," Mr Hunt told Radio 2SM.

"But we can shine a spotlight on it, and say Australia is taking steps and we want to be a world leader in protecting these great species."

Mr Hunt vowed to bring up the matter with the South African government and seek their cooperation in refusing licences for Australians wanting to take part in canned hunts.

But James Paterson from the free market Institute of Public Affairs think tank has questioned why Mr Hunt is trying to tell another country what to do.

"The Government appears to be asking South Africa to have special laws for Australians who visit," Mr Paterson said.

"Australians would never tolerate a foreign government dictating what can be done within our borders, and equally it is not the role of the Australian government to interfere with lawful activities in other countries."

Canned hunting is a despicable affair at best, no matter how you look at it. It only fuels the 'greeny' argument and does nothing good for the hunting fraternity.

In any event - respect for the land and the animals on it is a number one priority for any ethical hunter. There is a definite difference between 'shooting' animals and 'hunting' them, in my book

These guys want you to have the impression that the canned hunts involve a caged lion and the guy with the gun walks up to the cage and shoots the lion....

While I'm sure there are some guys that do the wrong think, this is a load of #$%@. These hunts may be on fenced-in game reserves, but on vast properties. Most of the game probably dont even see a fence... and if they are bred, I couldnt care less provided the game is killed quickly and cleanly.

As far as bringing the trophies back, there is already the ridiculous CITES restrictions that regulate/prevent bring back of trophies, even though most of the species are not located anywhere near Australia.... any of those head or 'whole bodies' would only be allowed in if allowed by the international treaty (CITES= Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) - but of course we want to depart from this stringent international convention and go harder and alone???

So our minister is going to tell a minister in a foreign land how to regulate in his country?? against Aussies in another country?? is it April 1 or something?

Me, I dont care for Rhinos, I plan to shoot 2 POLAR BEARS!!

Laffin, I have a tendency to put anything that will eat you in the "to be revered, and left to wander on it's own life mission" .. Except pigs and buff. Not that I cant see the reason why people would, it would be an awesome trip for sure.

If you shoot an elephant in Africa, and they ARE shot/culled in area, they feed the locals for a month or more.
If you shoot a white bear, and they DO, you also feed the locals....

If you hunt game, it means you revere them highly, else you wouldn't be bothered... If you just wanted to kill animals (how hunters are invariably portayed) there are easier cheaper ways than spending 20 or 50 grand and flying to the ends of the earth

I agree with ya, I know my ideology seems weird, but it's a personal thing. I think I would get off just being out there with them, as long as they didnt want to eat me, I wouldn't raise my gun. But if it did, I wouldnt hesitate either.

"The Government appears to be asking South Africa to have special laws for Australians who visit," Mr Paterson said.

"Australians would never tolerate a foreign government dictating what can be done within our borders, and equally it is not the role of the Australian government to interfere with lawful activities in other countries."

This.

He can huff and puff and write all the letters he wants. As if the South African government is going to introduce a new set of laws just for hunting for visitors from one specific country.

"Please take your tourism money somewhere else, we don't want it."

What id be more worried about is them, making it illegal for us to do it, and get us charged when we land back in Oz.. And yes there are precedents for this kind of law, unconstitutional laws but a jail cell is still a jail cell.

If you have any examples of that I'd be interesting in reading them.

Basically that would be charging/convicting/punishing someone for obeying the laws of a foreign country while there.

You can imagine the political storm if an Australian was charged in a foreign country for something they did legally while in Australia. Imagine an Australian was arrested in an alcohol-free country because he admitted he'd drunk alcohol while in Australia. We'd never hear the end of it.

I don't think even our Government could be that hypocritical...

Every opposition member certainly wouldn't miss the opportunity to get up on their high-horse and use it as an excuse to crucify them in the public arena.

I don't see anyone putting that idea forward.
