Purchasing from US retailers online

Post by simmo » 29 Apr 2015, 9:09 pm

G'day all

I'm thinking of buying an old Spanish Mauser in 8mm as a side project to improve my shooting, branch into other disciplines of shooting and just to learn more.

Im thinking about purchasing stripper clips from an online shop in the US and was wondering if anyone had experience in purchasing things like this and what is required from a customs and paperwork perspective. There seems to be plenty of what I want on some US online stores but I don't want to get on the wrong side of the law.

Just keen to find out what peoples experiences have been with regards to purchasing gear from US stores or from anywhere else for that matter.

Cheers

I bought a box of new old stock stripper clips from the US on fleabay among other stuff and had no problem. Stripper clips definitely WILL NOT help you save ammo but they do improve the fun factor :-)
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

Strippers are great, if you know how to use them and the ammo is compatible, (steel cased / laquered give me trouble which I believe is the extra laquer in the rim groove...)

Before going to the trouble of trying to import, go along to a Military rifle shoot, or even join up!! you'll find that if you're polite enough, someone might even drop a bunch in your hand, or at worst ask for a few dollars.... no, asbolute greed hasnt yet permeated all levels of society, not just yet.

As far as getting them from OS; I would first get an import permit signed by your local Stasi... I mean politz.. yes, theyre not mags, 'WE' know that.... but 'clips' are by most of the half wits of society and interchangeable word with magazine...

I will get more and more difficult to get stuff gun related out of the USA, (and subsequently into Aus) since they started ratcheting up the export restrictions and now with the ratification of the global arms trade treaty that is "no meant to affect sporting gun related stuff... whatever... things WILL be changing.

Plenty of good buys in the US but either customs or shipping costs usually kill the deal most of the time :(

When i visit the US i make sure i drop by a Bass Pro before coming home.
I just buy small/light stuff knifes, camo, earmuffs, game calls, binos, range finders and the like, the savings are really good.
We have huge mark ups here in Oz, its a shame bring back rifles is too much bs.

Cheers for the feedback everyone. There are some great deals or there but it does sound like ITAR screws as lot of it.

Might need a trip across to pick up some bits and pieces and do some proper shooting while I'm there.

Thanks for the feed back and advice

That and our customs.

You know it's ass backwards when you can't import empty brass without permits and approvals, yet anyone can walking into a shop and buy it without a license or ID.

Same for knifes. You can't import folding blades but can buy one in any shop

Optics Planet on Amazon.

Order goes in no worries. I then get a message from Optics Planet well after the fact saying I couldn't have the 'Limbsaver Airtech slip on rubber but pad' as their RISK Management person decided this :unknown:

But they will allow a 'Limbsaver slip on but pad' in the previous model?

Makes total sense

I think someone needs to look up the definition of the word "risk"

And I retired from that game un defeated haha used to play parents and their friends while they drank. From age 10 - 14 never lost
And no they weren't being nice :? You can play it online against random people also I found.

On topic;
OpticsPlanet order revised. Apparently it is to do with the manufacturer/suppler not wanting to allow that particular new model limbsaver to be exported  $26 - $36 US vs $79 - $110 Aus

Added my other stuff including carbon fibre one piece cleaning rods (all same length)... bam postage option of economy goes away and add another $160 ? message at bottom says due to weight blah blah expedited or express options only. Load of BS.
remove just one rod of a particular brand (gunslick) and price back to economy = cheap.

Tried leaving the rods in and removing a few heavy little items but no economy option still. Bloody ridiculous !! So left one cal rod out as they didn't have what I wanted in another brand available.

The options shippers send seems to be the problem.

People will only send priority courier services which is 10x the price of normal shipping.

Normal shipping only takes a few days longer too :problem:
