firearm state reg fees compared

Post by brim » 05 Sep 2023, 10:42 am

New A/B licensee here - while waiting for my first PTA I thought I'd look into how the various fees differ across states and come up with a total cost of ownership from the fee schedules and other info available online. I know I had a hard time figuring out exactly what else I had to cater for along with the purchase price when buying 2nd hand here in SA. Hopefully it's useful to others or just to compare & see who has it best

Let me know if i've gotten anything very wrong. I couldnt find any info on transfer fees for TAS, ACT and WA
Mods pls move if this is in the wrong section

WA has it the worst but we already knew that. I exclude them as their system isn't really comparable

Vic has it best, with NT, SA and NSW the worst - although TAS and ACT might be the same but I couldn't find any info on transfer costs.

Excluding transfer costs VIC is still top @ $9.20 followed by everywhere else at $40-50 except NT at $81

Vic is effectively $50 transfer, $25 from old owner to gundealers book, then $25 from dealer to new owner. If your dealer is one you visit often then they may only charge one fee, or if a good customer then nothing.
