Sound moderators (silencers, if you must) in the UK

Post by No1_49er » 24 Feb 2024, 8:36 am

Here’s a nation that banned, outright, the ownership of pistols in the UK after the heinous act (Dunblane, Scotland) of a person who was known not to be a “fit and proper person” but, nonetheless, was able to maintain a firearms licence.
The ban is so thorough that it is not even possible to transit through a UK airport en-route to another destination, with a pistol.

Despite the down-side, the UK Home Office is inviting people to engage in a consultative process for the purpose of deregulating sound moderators. https://basc.org.uk/home-office-launche ... oderators/
It's an interesting read, and the justifications for the change.

The Australian States and Territories consider these devices to be so evil that it is virtually impossible to use one, let alone actually own one.
Our neighbours “across the ditch” are almost looked upon as being social pariahs if they DON’T use a moderator, whether it be for hunting or on a competition shooting range. The device is so innocuous that it can be purchased in the same way as one would purchase a bar of chocolate.
Does it feature in any criminal statistics? No, it does not.

And, it’s not as though the subject hasn’t been scrutinised within at least one jurisdiction in Australia, namely NSW. You can find the report here https://ro.ecu.edu.au/ecuworks2011/858/

Why is it still banned here? Oh, that’s right – politicians who believe what they see in the movies.
Keep the pressure up, fellows. There’s enough anecdotal evidence, which is increasing, to support the use of the device, and the outright stupidity of the ban.

I would think that by the time we manage to get silencers all firearms will have already been banned anyway.

Just to be precise the UK has not banned pistols. The island of Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) has banned them but Northern Ireland(part of the UK) has not. You can own pistols for sports use and even for self defence. Although the latter is hard to legally justify and as of July 2023, 2723 people have pistols for self defence in Northern Ireland(the UK).

Pistols alive and thriving at my club in Kent,UK. Cap and ball catered for by ruger big time. Metallic cartridge pistols must have a wrist bar welded to the grip extending the length to whatever is the requirement and you can fit silencers or moderators or why.
Only problem is with cap and ball pistols you can't have multiple cylinders at least the police are awkward about it but never say never.
You might see ruger advertising their 44 cap and ball pistols,I believe they get upto 44 magnum power quite easily.
Not as convenient as normal autos but needs must when the devil rides etc.
I hope that the moderator issue will be off licence in the not too distant future.
