Taking a barrel blank home to NZ?

Post by aimless » 27 Jul 2025, 4:55 pm

Hi Guys,
Can anyone help me here please? A cobber in Queensland has a barrel blank, unthreaded, unchambered that I ‘ll buy from him but I don’t know if I can just put it in my suitcase to take home after our holiday. I’ve tried researching the customs and police sites but nothing specific to this case, I don’t want to end up being a criminal, does anyone know how I should go about this?
Much appreciated

I would talk to Border Force here and whatever the NZ Customs Service is called.
I would expect you to need an import permit at your end and possibly your mate might want an export permit here.
Perhaps just talk to your dealer about importing it for you?

I'm happy to assist on NZ end, import permits take up to 12 weeks currently, even for me as dealer.

Thanks Bladeracer, yeah, I have the NZ side of it sorted, import permits etc, it’s just getting it out of here, a bare barrel blank unworked such as this doesn’t require a licence at home until it’s actually screwed into the action hence I made no arrangements for this side thinking it would be the same. I’ve had a reply back from Australian Police directing me to the Border Force so will get onto it tomorrow. They were very helpful providing me the link to the appropriate procedure.

Things here that we don't need a licence to purchase or possess sometimes still require permits to import them from outside the country.
