Not sure about gun powder but activated charcoal is made from coconut shells ground up. The toilet paper is an interesting thing. I agree with the poster that it probably has to do with the paper being turned to charcoal in an airtight container and not being directly burnt. Thats just a guess but a little educated at that.

Well yeah that's how you make any charcoal....

Yeah I know thats how its meant to be made but I have a feeling there might have been a bit too much oxygen available when they made their charcoal from other items. The process of it actually getting burnt is what I think reduced the effectiveness of the other options.
