bore seasoning,
Its just an old metal finishing technique that seals and protects steel and iron. much like seasoning your cast iron pots n pans.

check these out, http://www.mooseforge.com/Techniques/finish.html not BP related but there's some similar recipes happening there.

Im going to nail this recipe one way or another... I'm still thinking its turps, paraffin wax and a tad of linseed oil which would explain the light tan colour.

Ok.
No I don't know what it is,I've always assumed its a water based cutting oil or something.
I've never heard of seasoning a barrel either. All the oil is meant to do is prevent rust and absorb salts from the burnt blackpowder left after cleaning. And mineral oils apparently mix with blackpowder residue and form tar, thats why you don't use them.
I don't swab my 50 cals before shooting,I probably should. Neither do I swab before shooting my 12g. But I do with my 36. Only time my lack of swabbing pre shooting has caused me trouble was once early on with the 36 when I had sprayed a bunch of RP7 down the barrel. Because of the smaller powder charge soaking in the liquid I experienced a dud fire with plenty of unburned wet powder left in the barrel.

That's a shame.
I'll keep chipping away at it.
I'll have it in a few days

I'm surprised neither of you fellas have heard of barrel seasoning.
Perhaps I've been hanging around Colonel Sanders too long :unknown:

So, what's an alternative to leave the barrel stored for a few months? Some lards and vegetable oils tend to go rancid/off over time.

ATF is vegitable oil based?

Wet ballistol patch and a squirt down the pipe for good measure;

If they go "off" wouldn't the level of rust protection be reduced??

I would imagine so, who knows what it breaks down into.
ATF would work fine though, that stuff never goes off lol

ballistol is 60-100% white mineral oil.
(Paraffin oil) not real "natural"
