Flintlock rifle

G'day all,

I'm in the market for a flintlock rifle, been struggling to find anything. Looking for a .50 cal and up hunting style flinter.

If anyone knows of one that may be available please let me know.

When I was in the market for a front stuffer I was lucky enough that Green River Rifleworks was still operating in Adelaide, they were black powder specialists.
I ended up coming home with a lovely 50 cal percussion cap made bu Eurroarms.
With some patience something will eventually pop up on used guns, also making countless calls to dealers might net a result.

There's a couple of lads (noisy dad and big pete) on here who will no doubt chime in and possibly have some leads for you.

My only regret was not doing enough homework regarding what would suit my needs the best.
I probably should have looked for something in .45 with a tight twist as my 50 is best suited to round balls

I currently have a .50 cal inline and a .50 cal fast twist sidelock for sabots and conicals, and a .54 1:65 twist sidelock for round balls but really keen to get into the flintlock side of things too.

I personally prefer round balls, there's just something about them. I still enjoy the bullet shooters and they're great on game, but I'm mostly interested in a flint rifle with a slow twist.

Awesome, sounds like the flintlock is just what you need to fill the void.

Yeah a flintlock would be interesting, something to add to the challenge and a real step back into the past - no fiddly caps or pesky catridges here!

I'm keen on a 45 if one shows up as I have a few 45 projectiles left from a previous project.

Why not ring a gun shop? Great places, sell guns. Try Northern Shooters Supplies, took over the BP business from Graeme Forbes, or Centreway in East Keilor. John usually has a few BP on the racks and if he doesn't have a flinter he can soon get one. Alternatively buy the one on usedguns, Cheers.

Yes I saw that, it's also about $3-400 more expensive than that gun sells for new. I would caution anyone against buying that particular rifle.

Have you tried to buy a pedersoli new atm ? I was quoted 1700 for a trade musket 6 or so years ago by Graham Forbes,I can only imagine they've gone up since then

I have as a matter of fact, picked up a new hawken through them earlier this year and got a run down on all new pricing. They did indeed have an increase last year, my post about cost still reflects current pricing.

I spoke to him last week about the kentucky and alamo which are both around $1500 and frontier in walnut $1700.

My hawken was $2800, the most by quite a margin I've paid for a gun. But I had had that money set aside for just that, and she's already paying for herself. I'm still licking my financial wounds from that and am not in the market for a new or new priced gun. The unfortunate/fortunate thing is BP rifles do not hold their value so good deals can be had.

Mind you I'm about to sell my inline and am fully aware I'll wear the brunt of that too.

Wouldn't be worth the cost of shipping if they could mate.

I did think about getting a kibler colonial and have it as a build project but even that would add up in cost by the time it was here

Not built a Kibler but you are looking at $2,500 for one or a decent set of parts by the time they get here.

I've got a 50 cal pedersoli frontier that I shortened. I've hunted with it,I don't really do target shooting except to sight in or practice with the flinchlock

@bigpete how much did you cut from it? The length of some of those longrifles is one of the things I think will be a pain. I'm strictly a hunter and mostly deer. In thick stuff a 40" barrel is going to make for some interesting hunts at times I reckon.

They tell me you eventually get used to a mini explosion going off inches from your face, I can only assume that's the case!

I cut 9" off mine.
I haven't yet gotten used to it,in fact prolonged shooting of the flintlock actually gives me a flinch that translates to other firearms.

It balances WAY better with the shorter barrel,and is a lot lighter too.
I've not shot many animals with,only that goat and a rabbit. I do need to take it out more but I'm not confident in my ability with it like I am with my caplock
