Expressions of interest

Post by Gamerancher » 09 Apr 2022, 10:16 am

G'day All
I have been trying for years now to get a proper "Creedmoor" shoot up and running for black-powder rifle shooters, both cartridge and muzzle-loading.
I've had numerous discussions with the powers that be, ( SSAA ) and get the reply that there isn't enough interest. I always argue that there are thousands of suitable rifles out there and the owners must be looking for somewhere to use them. I do compete in BPCR silhouette and long range black-powder, both cartridge and M/L and a lot of folks I talk to say they would be interested in a Creedmoor shoot.

Back in 2011 I ran an informal weekend to introduce BPCR silhouette. I organised for a couple of very experienced black-powder shooters to attend so that they could share their knowledge and help newcomers get started. We had demonstrations/instruction on loading ammo and load development techniques, sighting in methods, wind reading and ballistics/trajectory characteristics for black-powder loads. The idea was to get people interested in BPCR silhouette and drum up numbers. We had a great weekend and it went on to be an annual event that morphed into the NSW State Titles.

What I would like to do is put a similar weekend on for Mid and Long range black-powder target rifles. ( 300, 500, 600, 800, 900 and 1000 yards)
So, who'd be interested and where do we hold it? I have a couple of suitable ranges here in NSW in mind but I am open to suggestions.

If I could get my 1874 in 45-120 to shoot I would love to have a crack.

It sounds like a pretty exciting format.
I've done a little internet searching of the SA clubs and everything I've seen so far is 50 and 100 yards.
I'd love to try my hand at BP long range shooting but unfortunately NSW is a bit of a hike for me.

I would be in Dan before I get too old.
The last one I went to was at Belmont in 2006. SSAA and Graeme Wright put it on. The Kiwis and Yanks came over and I got to meet Dave Gullo and Ernie Stallman.

Bit more info.
We used to shoot the odd informal match here and the Belmont boys would come up and camp on the range. My two shooting mates have had to give it away and its been only me having a practise now.
We are having our AGM in a couple of weeks and I will bring up the subject of long range BP here.
Its a QRA range but I got permission to build a bunker with a couple of steel plates in it, 20 years ago. I no longer have a position in the club but will see what happens.
Our range is at Kilkivan 4600 and been here since 1912.
We cant shoot 800 as its on the side of a hill but 900 is at the top. We used to shoot at 700 but it was OK prone but once I shot sitting off cross sticks and with the line of fire being so much higher than the line of sight I forgot about the high tension power cables. Yes I shot one. Broke it cleanly. I was not popular, so we give 700 a miss now

It is, but that is way more work than I want to put into my shooting :-)

Unfortunately no I won't be going to Berriedale, had temporary plans earlier but I can't get the time off work and with the price of fuel its just not worth it to me, might try for Australia Day next year :unknown:
