45-70 Black Powder

Post by KennyA » 31 Jul 2017, 12:37 pm

Hi,

I'm wanting to try reloading some black powder for my 45-70.

I went to one of the larger firearm shops in Brisbane and they sold me some Pyrodex (P) FFFG.

I have just read an article that only recommends this powder for pistols.

I plan to shoot a Lee 405g cast bullet.

Can I safely use this powder in my 45-70......?

Cheers

I'm not a fan of substitutes but yes you can. Try somewhere between 57 and 60 gns. The bullet will compress this load. "P" labeled BP and subs will burn a little faster and cleaner the the rest. You may feel increased recoil compared to other from pistol powder.
BP lubes are are a whole world of arguments and suggestions. Here's one that I've had good success with;
1 part lard
1 part parafin wax
1/2 part beeswax
Melt them in a Pyrex jug and pour in a pan of lined up bullets, let it harden and push the bullets out with your thumb.
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

I'd recommend getting some real black powder.

Rebel gunworks or Queensland gun exchange (woolloongabba) gunworld (browns plains) usually have 2f or 3f. If you get hooked and go through more, combat simulation systems out at helidon is the place to go. You'll pay 90-100 per kg around brisbane or I think about 70 from helidon. Just need to phone ahead a day or so before.

G'day KennyA,
Pyro P is fine in your 45-70, as Noisydad said start around 60g. I use to load 70 under 405g pill for my 1873 Trapdoor until BP became available again and now only load 2F BP. I wont enter the "lube" thing, for the reasons Noisydad said, everyone has their preferred one, and funnily enough they ALL work! Cheers.
