Gun licence applications in NSW up 7000 per cent in some cat

Post by Zappa » 13 Feb 2026, 1:12 pm

It seems NSW’s tough new gun laws may have backfired.

Gun licence applications in the state have exploded since the announcement of new firearms restrictions in the wake of the Bondi terror attack.

Some categories have increased by 7000 per cent, in just one month.

A national gun buyback scheme, co-ordinated by the federal government, is the centrepiece of Labor’s gun control measures, and will be funded on a 50/50 basis by the Commonwealth and states.

Now who would have thought something like this would happen? :D

Lets analyze this a bit further of this irrational governments unintended consequences. It's cause its what we do.

More license holders \ members and firearm owners means

1) Increased income for NSW state coffers. Licensing. PTA's --- boooo
2) Increase in memberships for sporting clubs. SSAA, SU
3) Temporary increase of dealer revenue to process PTA's . transfers mostly.
4) Modest Increase in income for dealers \ fishing sporting good shops to cater for more members. Accessories, shooters needs etc.
5) Stronger voice in the political sphere.
6) More firearms in the community.
7) Potentially more demands for ammo and other expandable items

and so forthe.
Im sure there's more.

I’d envisage a certain percentage of all that would be husbands/wives, children, sisters/brothers etc etc taking up firearms that would otherwise be “over the limit per license” so as to save firearms that were otherwise legally owned previously.

Such a stupid article. Are people really that stupid in regards to maths? I suggest they learn about scaling. Wow 144 people applied for their collector licence. So the 7000% increase means nothing because of the scale.

“Applications to become a ‘firearms collector’ allowing unlimited gun ownership spiked by 7000 per cent to 144 applications.”

Sensationalism. What else would you expect from a Rupert rag ?

Next time I'll check the headlines before i post as i normally bypass the attention grabbers. This came up in my news feed cause of the firearm content.

Yeah I guess it is just sensualism. Like with the bondi mass shooting last year one could say mass shootings in australia are up 100% for the year 2025. The scale is so low so the percentages are so high.

Also they made a lot of guns into cat C, so now they are saying there is an increase in cat C applications? Are these people really retarded?

What did they think would happen? People are applying to keep some of their guns under the new laws that you wrote and your surprised by this?

In WW1 with the introduction of helmets head wounds went up thousands of percent so people in the British army thought the helmet was causing this.

However they figured out when looking deeper at the data that helmets were actually saving lives and the thousands of percent increase in head wounds was because those people would of been recorded as a death not a head wound if it was not for the helmet.

My point is that raw data is useless without analysing it.

If your some bean counter in London looking at data of thousands of soldiers having head wounds every month when previously it was only a dozen it could be confusing initially.

Blokes on the land just over the border into Minns country I've been yarning with over the last few weeks are all having their whole families now get their own firearms licences. Wives, kids of correct age, everyone. A, B and C too.
If they get extra "C"s in tge families, they're planning more new purchases too.
One bloke did say, he thought the government was deliberately raising the licence costs to try and make it hard for budget conscious families, I don't know if that's true or not.

So again, true leaders do not jump to react, over-react, or become instantly absorbed by emotion.
They sit back till all the squealing and white-anting dies down, and make informed decisions. We who are looking on can see who are NOT true leaders how, quite clearly.
I hope this really bugs them, brings more people into the fold and subsequently angers more people next time we're up to be backstabbed by these lesser people, and they change their votes accordingly, forever.

very good point . data and surveys are used a lot these days to press a point of view , but the context of that information is not always unbiased

I am happy about the media report. Because the uninformed are now surpised, and the "get guns off the streets" looks stupid, which it was. While it is easily understood by us, I can only hope it makes them think.

According to this QLD leads the federation in registered guns. We need to bump these numbers up.

Crazy how VIC and NSW have bigger populations but QLD has more guns.
