Shooters Union support for suppressors in QLD

Many years ago I helped a good mate to cull bunnies on council and golf course land. He used a Ruger 10/22 with a supressor. All legal then (after he jumped over hoops etc with the authorities) and from what I remember, the quietest and best results were with using sub sonic ammo. The standard ammo of the day was bit louder but the supressor also worked quite well with them. Shooting was done early evening or early morning at the designated places. No I did not shoot rabbits myself, I was the " bunnypickerupper".

Sitting here talking to the missus and just hung up after ordering 22T of cottonseed, delivered tomorrow.
She said, do you realise how loud you're talking lately? No, I hadn't.
I wear hearing protection whenever I'm in the workshop, whenever I'm shooting. Have since I was an apprentice.
She's a GP, and she said, "It's all that shooting, no way that hearing protection you wear gets that sound level down to levels that don't ruin your hearing".
Sitting here in the quiet, having gin after another day, my ears are ringing.

And I still have to suffer the results from my ignorant peers who have no idea, and agenda-driven politicians and police who shine their knobs in taxpayer-funded offices. And people wonder why some get annoyed.
But we'll keep trying.

The Nationals in Queensland have stated a firm stance against suppressors. And last year’s election was a very convincing win.
I don’t think you can label the Nationals socialists today. In a distant past. Now they just flip flop between state support and free trade. Cake and eat it too.
In the Victorian bill for them they voted against also. From memory it was a 36 to 4 vote. Only four in favour.

When you read the transcripts you realise what you’re up against. The majority opinion is not great country wide.

I think there was an occupational safety challenge in Queensland. Tribunal approved. Police appealed.

You don’t get another election in QLD till 2028 and there have been some more liberal views expressed by some labor members. But not enough. It’s not a policy they care about. It’s a non issue for the major parties. It just puts too many colleagues off side.

And the police in all states aren’t having it anyway.
NSW for recreational permits. They’re either refusing or if approved they won’t process the application


So I guess that leaves liability. It’s illegal to expose anyone to 140db in several acts. You could maybe take joint action against the state and sue them. I think more than 20% hearing loss is a substantial payout. But losing would be very costly.

Don’t quote on any of this. Just of the top of my head. But the opposition is just overwhelming. It’s not going to happen. Find a new cause.

When it comes to feeding the nation, the last thing farmers should have to worry about is feeding an uncontrollable pest population that keeps coming back, uninvited.

We’re talking about feral pigs.

Feral pigs are costing millions of dollars worth of property damage, crop loss, and the spread of diseases, no matter the season, let alone in Queensland risk of hearing loss. For farmers and pest controllers who use firearms as tools of their trade, repeated exposure to firearm noise is an occupational hazard.

Did you know that Queensland has some of Australia's most restrictive suppressor laws, leaving many primary producers without access to a hearing protection tool that the most other states can access?

Seems like an odd fact, when most states in Australia have implemented a permit system for suppressors, giving its users a practical and needed safety measure for people carrying out essential land-management work. It also reduces disturbance to livestock, working dogs and nearby properties.

Previous petitions have been raised with the Queensland Government, and it’s evident it's just not an issue for them. At Shooters Union, it is an issue for us. It is time they introduce a permit system like other states.

Applicants would have to show a genuine occupational need and comply with clear rules covering registration, storage and use. We believe this can be done without weakening Queensland’s firearms licensing system. The current law needs to recognise legitimate pest-control work.
