I don't know of many companies who like people using their computers during working hrs for other than work related stuff be it guns or personal stuff unless you have a prior agreement lets face it they own the gear they're entitled to stipulate the using of it no different than someone using your mobile phone without permission
Inlight of what has happened in NZ i'm not surprised companles have used gun talk as a don't use our equipment to talk guns as a muscle flex

I'm reading most have missed the mark by a significant margin.
The OP has expressed an issue with topic discrimination in relation to firearms. And not explicitly about the acceptable usage policy of their company, and whether you should be allowed to use your companies facilities for recreational use. That requires another thread and probably not suited here.

On topic, I can understand wrt to recent events in NZ why companies have upped the ante and forums such as these are banned. But should they be ?
Apart from the graphic content in threads with dead animal carcasses, is that bad to warrant banning it alongside dark pornography and other nefarious sites ?

My advise is to avoid clicking on banned sites because you may get a please explain from your department director on information provided to them by IT sec.

Went to check in today but it came up with a blocked site message " Weapon sites are prohibited".
Seems they have a blanket ban on anything hunting, sport shooting related.
This annoys me. The term "weapon" implies that I plan on using my legally purchased, stored and used rifles for the purposes of harm against another human.
I get it that it's the companies internet service so they can restrict as they like but I resent the implication that my hobby is somehow wrong or immoral.
I like to shoot foxes and rabbits, I'm probably of more of a service to the environment than others who judge me.
Which, in all probability, has got absolutely nothing to do with your employer or your employment.

xDom, get over it.
Your employer will provide internet access for work related purposes. That you have found time to peruse sites other than those specifically employment related is of no consequence.
I don't know about Victorian legislation but here in Queensland the Act, Regulations, and most other documentation, refers to weapons. Like it or not, that is how the politicians want it to be.
My former employers have specific policies which all employees must read and acknowledge by signing, and transgressions can invoke penalty up to and including dismissal. Harsh? Not at all; you are using their equipment in their time.
Your employer probably uses the services of another provider who applies filters that can be specific, broad brush, and not negotiable by employees. Even if you were to take your own PC to work and request a "guest account", those sites will still be blocked because you are using their server.

I think he's referring to the work for the dole scheme.

This unwillingness to work for a living is exactly why they're replacing us with robots, computers and foreigners on 151 Subclass Visas.

I have just read the West Australian paper and an MP did not get a E-mail from a professor because the filter picked up the word cum laude in the topic.Welcome to the new world.I have just started to do maintenance as a full time career and I now have an I pad and iPhone on a holder on the windscreen and cooler box plugged in the lighter to keep my water cold. This new tech is near essential for work but there will always be a dark side to the internet.

I'm a maintenance electrician, can't replace me with a robot, I'll just unplug the bastard.
