So far, the reports I've read only say that 30 odd firearms were registered, but make no mention that the alleged owner was licenced. If you believe the arthorities and media that only LAFO have firearms, and that we are the only source of illegal firearms in this country as most people now believe, then, yes, him being licenced is an easy conclusion to jump to. I could be wrong though, as I am very cynical of the media and tend to read between the lines to see what they are not reporting, as that tends to be closer the real story than the dribble they put into print.

If you watch the video, they state he WAS licensed and the 32/38 registered firearms were legitimately his and 205 illegally possessed firearms were seized including handguns, shotguns, an 'SKS assault rifle with bayonet' and a 'Machine gun' (but they state it was not in operational condition).

They also mention he had flash bangs.

What's frustrating here is that they are mixing things that would not necessarily be illegal if he were licensed. i.e possession of reloading equipment/propellant is not illegal if he is licensed. Not only that, knives and daggers should not be considered illegal or 'illicit' as they claim in the same sentence. Even crossbows are legal in SA as long as you have a reason to have it and that can be you are a collector, or you hunt with it. However they are still classed as a 'Prohibited Weapon', just with lots of exemptions.

To me, I don't think this person was a risk to the community - He is a primary producer that liked his guns and probably had them since the 80's before the reform came in or they were part of someone else's collection he inherited. Not many of them that you can make out in the pic were even remotely new. Unfortunately that is not good for news headlines though.

In most cases, yes
Care factor for looking after the firearms= zero
Especially when the law has been clearly broken.

A statement made by an official, can be totally differant to an official statement, especially if that official is a known anti. As I said, I've not read any media report stating that he was licenced, and those media reports will have come from an official statement (written) given to the media by SAPOL.

I don't think it really matters if he was no harm to anybody in the police eyes, I think him just having the illegal firearms was a chance to incorporate all the other guns for media hype all straight thinking licenced gun owners know we have licenced people willing to push the legal boundaries same as police, lawyers ,politicians and so on it's getting caught is the issue this bloke must have known he was breaking the law and dreading this day but he and he alone is the reason he is in trouble because he decided to push the boundary and was caught if he was licenced he would have known the laws with the storage of powder ,ammo, rifles and so on it was the illegal firearms that were the issue I feel sorry he has lost a collection but he would have known the deal and made his decision and in saying that it's people like that that gives the legal and licenced gun owners a bad reputation when found with an illegal firearm or large amounts of illegal firearms you can rest assured if he was licenced this incident will be used by law enforcement to show that being licenced does not mean we licenced gun owners are to be trusted with the laws in place hence they will push for tighter gun laws and I don't think that is fair to all the other law abiding gun owners

In most cases, yes
Care factor for looking after the firearms= zero
Especially when the law has been clearly broken.

Which is why if you have to temporarily relinquish your firearms for any reason, organising them to be held by a dealer is by far the most sensible thing to do.
