How many Aussies own guns?

Post by bladeracer » 19 Sep 2020, 6:07 pm

Playing with some numbers, and I'm thinking about one-in-every-ten Australians that are allowed to own firearms, do own them. Seems high so I thought I'd put it up for discussion :-)

Population around 25.5-million.
Population 18-years and older, about 65% of the total - about 16.5-million.
Exclude all those that can't own firearms legally due to criminal backgrounds, DVO's, mental health, etc and I reckon we're very close to about ten-percent of all Australians that are legally able to own firearms, are licenced, already.

Getting a precise number of licences in Oz is extremely difficult, possibly because it's increasing so rapidly. I think most agree it's in excess of 1.3-million. Some talk about 2-million, but I think that is a stretch to substantiate.

Firearm ownership is a very big deal in Australia, despite what the government and media want us to believe.

Yeah bladeracer it would be good to know the exact number and i reckon it would surprise some people to see the exact number but i'm doubting it will ever come out because the gov wouldn't want us knowing for reasons unknown to us, another thing i wonder about is the ''Fit and proper'' clause, where do they draw the line on that , are you not proper if you don't pay your tax on time, have an argument with your neighbor, speeding ticket, parking ticket, the list goes on so will this be the norm into the future? so if the numbers are what you think they might be, i wonder why the gun laws seem so easy to change for the law makers and why isn't there more push back from gun owners, my thoughts on why is the good old Aussie trait of ''She'll be right mate it'll sort itself out'' but unfortunately those days are gone and if we don't stick to our pride and honor of sticking up for each other then we'll lose the lot .

The best figures generally available are estimates up to 2016, there are figures for the whole world on this site

https://www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/region/australia

Interesting that as countries become more authoritarian and citizens have fewer rights gun ownership becomes more tightly regulated or even banned outright.
It seems to be the model that left wing governments are aiming for.

There are 3 million registered firearms in Australia.[35]

In March 2017, there were 915,000 registered firearms in New South Wales, 18,967 in the ACT, 298,851 in South Australia, and 126,910 in Tasmania. The other jurisdictions did not make the information public.[36]
personally i think these numbers may be off

Haha nope. I think you got that backwards mate.
Most permissive countries where citizens have rights to own guns are constitutional republics. That usually came about by socialist revolutions.

We also have a comparatively high number of unregistered firearms in Australia, due to poorly functioning firearms reforms implemented in 1996.
They are classed as grey firearms.
And then theres the illicit trade which went of the charts around 2010 probably because you really don’t need to know ;)
But it’s not good.

That site doesn't have the best figures it's run by the Kiwi Philip Alpers who failed to impose gun laws on Kiwis before moving here.

A bit on Mr Alpers here- https://ssaa.org.au/news-resources/know-your-opponent/philip-alpers-a-most-dubious-researcher

As for numbers of licenses and registered firearms we are over 2 million licenses with over 6 million registered firearms according to Crimtrac database.

Can't find current report too lazy here are numbers from 2012- 2016 Page 63. https://www.acic.gov.au/sites/default/files/2016/10/crimtrac_ar_2015-16_final_071016.pdf?acsf_files_redirect

I believe they deliberately under report numbers because it hurts the grabbers when numbers are increasing.

so since my attachment seems to have hurt someones feelings l will be a bit more direct :wtf:
going by your own link womble what you say is backwards considering that vietnam, china and laos are some of the countries that have had socialist revolutions and are not permissive countries where citizens have rights to own guns
you are showing confirmation bias and twisting the truth a bit mate ;) you are trying to rewrite history like hmmmm what country is it
