"Australia has the worst rate of animal extinction"

Post by effex » 03 Jun 2014, 4:10 pm

"Australia has the worst rate of animal extinction in the world, and a new study shows it's getting worse."

If that's not a wake up call for the feral-huggers I dunno what is. From the ABC.

Fighting back against feral cat invasion

Australia has the worst rate of animal extinction in the world, and a new study shows it's getting worse.

A three-year national review has found that Australia’s mammal extinction rate is higher than previously thought, and will increase rapidly unless there's a plan to protect all native species.

The Action Plan for Australian Mammals draws on the contributions of more than 200 experts.
It found that more than 10 per cent of the country’s endemic species have become extinct since European settlement, and a further 20 per cent of land mammals are threatened.

But there is hope. The Australian Wildlife Conservancy is building exclusion zones against one of the main culprits - feral cats.

CEO Atticus Fleming says it's estimated there are 15,000,000 feral cats in Australia, and each of them kills around five native animals a night.

He says sanctuaries established by the AWC show populations of native animals bounce back after feral animals are eliminated.

AWC is the largest private owner of land for conservation in Australia, protecting more than three million hectares in the Kimberley, Cape York, Lake Eyre and the Top End.

How many do we need before the hippies acknowledge hunting as the solution I wonder.

30,000,000 feral cats maybe...

Still remember the stupidest argument I've ever heard against hunting as pest control.

The blokes argument was that shooting foxes provided food for other foxes...

That shooting them actually created more foxes!

Ridiculous obviously.

Not to mention the painfully obvious fact that the foxes are eating regardless of how many you shoot and if they're not eating each other, what are they eating? That's right... everything else!

Maybe he's just solved world hunger?

If shooting animals makes more of them, I think we have a solution...

This little charmer, along with 3 mates have been cleaning up the Bush Turkey chicks. It's taken me 5 months to get it in a trap, 3 weeks of serious trapping for this one. It's certainly trap wise but persistence and a change of bait paid of.
Only 2.9999 million to go.

Don't see a problem if they want to eat the scrub turkeys tbh, they're little SOBs in their own respect. Same with the rats and mice.

Bustards don't live down here unfortunately, but we do get the native hen or 'turbo chook' as called by the residents. They are everywhere, and you're lucky to not run one over just going down to the shops.

That might be why you've got none down there, the feral cats have cleaned 'em all up.

Around The Launceston Golf Club there are Turbo Chooks - they fascinate me the speed they run at, well named too.

No bush turkey in Tas.

Just want to point out that some of the biggest feral cat lovers I know are One Nation supporters, def not hippies. This isn't a left or right wing issue; it's a general stupidity issue across brainless morons!

A big pussy alright, have you seen the photo of the cat called "Fang"..?

What do you find as the "best bait" for the caged traps? I've tried tinned cat food, tinned sardines, W.A Pilchards and cooked chicken - not much success. Had the best with a dried coloured cat food, like kids spaghetti in shape but would like a change of diet.

The rain has cleared up here last night, so set out the traps and had Houdini in the trap, poof and gone, don't know how it got out but...
