Victorians warned against taking photos with guns

Post by whert » 09 Dec 2014, 7:44 am

FYI for everyone I guess, but mostly VIC shooters.

Licensed firearm holders are being urged by police to stop taking selfies with their guns because criminals are trawling social media looking for easy targets.

Victoria Police Senior Sergeant Andrew Armstrong says gun owners are becoming too complacent and recklessly showing off ownership of their weapons without considering the consequences.

Any public display of firearm ownership, including stickers on vehicles or house windows, can attract unwanted attention from thieves, he says.

"Some criminals trawl social media networks looking for easy targets and items of interest, including ammunition and other weaponry," Sen Sgt Armstrong says.

He says it is easy to gather personal information through public profiles or unsecure accounts and licence holders need to be responsible.

"If your firearms can be easily accessed, you need to improve your security," he says.

"Some licence holders are becoming too complacent."

Firearm storage offences remain a regular occurrence across the state and police are continuing impromptu inspections over coming months as a significant number of gun owners still failing to comply with the law, police say.

Failure to properly store these items can lead to penalties from about $8000 or 12 months imprisonment, to $35,000 or four years imprisonment, depending on the category of firearm.

I'd love to see proof of this.

Unless it's one of your mates who rips you off I'm not really seeing it.

They see a photo of you with a rifle? And then what? PM you asking for your address?

Unless you're real stupid with the information your posting and giving everything away I'm not so worried.

Maybe on Facebook or something where 3rd parties may know you but not be trusted?

I've no fear posting it on the forum though.

As usual theorising..... 'cause someone told my neighbours cousin, that there was this guy out back of that place .....put a picture of his gunnn on faceplant, and, and, 2 years later his house was done over......

It goes without saying, DO NOT advertise....stickers are a big no-no on the car like the old WINCHESTER right across the back window of the ute....

But remove your association with your PERSONAL INTERESTS from social media? Personally I couldnt care less about posting every detail about my life online, but if thats you... just go for it. Just dont post geo-reffed pics, pics of street signs, you house etc..... be discreet, common sense.

This just sounds like an excuse though to;
1) As eluded to, discouraging the sport/recreation/profession of shooting in social media
2) Get the firearms-storage-crime-association thing in the papers again - and remind lawful firearm owners that they/we are the most persecuted/regulated/targeted part of society by the law. If an owner, say, forgot to lock the storage after a long day shooting, gets a knock at the door and the local 'law enforcer' happens to be conducting a random inspection......you were just reminded up there ^, $8,000 to $35,000 penalty and up to 4 years locked up.

How monumentally ridiculous.
How did we get to this point?
Well, silence is implied consent isnt it?? Yup.
Think about ^it!

How about if a chippy forgot to lock up his hammer after work and he was threatened with that penalty!! What, you cant kill just as easily with a hammer??

147,000 people died in Australia last year,
43,000 died from cancer related disease, about a third of the DIGESTIVE organs, another third from circulatory and heart related.....
273 died from assault, 40 of those with a firearm, 14% homicide by firearm, ONLY 14% of homicides but overall intentional firearm deaths (excluding suicide, which as far as I'm concerned fall under mental illness) represented 40/147000 deaths or 1 in 3675 deaths or 0.027% of deaths.....

WHY then are these people so damn hung up on guns! OUR guns (not so much the crims guns as they never randomly inspect THEIR storage!)

or look at it another way....

What are your chances of death should you FLY with a LARGE commercial airline, excluding small/light planes, and consider only, say one particular airline carrier - Malaysian Airlines (that makes it easier!)

During the last 12 months there were airline 'crashes' that killed in 44 Australians.....so therefore you have a greater chance of being killed by crashing from 30,000feet into the ground (or possibly the ocean, as the case may indeed be!?!?) in a giant aluminium cocoon THAN an Australian being murdered with a firearm..... think about that you anti-gun-cryptosocialist-come-communist-mentally-deficient green-tarded excuse for an intelligent member of our freedom yearning society

Yet they incessantly bang on about guns and rampant crime death misery perpetrated by guns and those using them....

They should bang on about banning chemical additives in food (refer about digestive system cancer) or actually do something about the thousands who die as a direct result of smoking chemically infused commercial cigarettes.... oh but the revenue we would lose!

They should bang on about the chemicals in the air and our environment, our houses , the sun (must ban those killer UV radiation).

No. The easy targets as usual. Green/gun grabber soldiers rant and create the vocal minority while their seniors rub their hands as they read Marx.

My head hurts, I'm going to go and play with my guns you effers! might even buy a few more, its the season!

1290 OUT!

That mirrors my thoughts.

Don't want pictures of regular people enjoying firearms responsibly.

(subject to common sense of course, don't post a picture of your house and street sign...)

Have to hide it so the anti's can continue their campaign against us cherry picking (or making up) the bits they spin for their agenda.

I only take pictures of mine holding them sidewards while I've got a stack of $5 fanned out of the table. Wear my hat backwards too.

So people know I'm a tough gangsta and they'll be too scared to rob me.

The media is the reason why people are so hung up about guns, its their agenda and they make use of the fear factor everytime something involving firearms happens (this is a world wide push) so its not just happening here.

As I say to anyone who starts on about firearms being dangerous etc I just ask them a couple of simple questions

1. Have you ever been shot at or had a firearm pointed at you? The answer is always no
2. Do you drive a car? have you had an vehicle accident or nearly been involved in one? answer is often yes to both or either

I then say which one poses more risk to you and your family? they generally shut up and f*** off about then. :D

These people are so ignorant they can't even work the simple s**t out for themselves, I love pointing out to them that they take their kids to school in one of the most dangerous things they can, that really f***s their firearms argument well and truly!

I tell people who like a drink that about 5,500 people die alcohol related deaths.

Compared to 40 (thanks 1290) for firearms.

The difference is SO huge that banning firearms shouldn't even get a mention before banning alcohol. Right?

The prospect of a dull Friday night without booze shuts them up too.

Roger 1290 message received. Straight to the point and extremely valid.

I don't like stickers on my car or my boat. I'm certainly not going to advertise the fact that I'm a shooter, because these days it's almost like admitting you have leprosy.

Even if a gun thief didn't follow me home to get my guns, or just break into my car, there's always a chance that a gun hating green might toss a brick through my car window.

Such are the times we live in damn and blast!

Turn off the location services when you take a photo or post on the internet.

I agree about the gun stickers etc on cars. Crims will do anything to get a gun including following you home or breaking into your car to get your identity and address.

hmm I'm torn over this really.

I really want to advertise my sport in a attempt to create a social norm... Hey look I'm a really nice caring fellar with great integrity and gold medalist morals and I have a gun rather than the current stigma over firearms that anyone who has got one is going to pull it out and start yeeharing in a trigger happy fashion because its ridiculously fun (<--maybe to the people who don't have firearms lol).

With that said I'm also very pro "keep the druggy criminals away from my firearms and public safety" and struggle to justify one over the other?

I want to do both =(

As above.

Some time ago I was thinking about getting the car window vinyled for the forum.

Get some advertising done any time I drive to the LGS or range.

Great... Except for the 7 nights a week it would be parked in my driveway like a neon green sign saying 'guns kept here'.

It's a missed opportunity, but I wouldn't risk one for the other.
See you on the firing line.

Agreed Aster.

I wouldn't sacrifice security (its a no brainer really) just so I could advertise my sport but guess all I was getting at was I wish I could do both.

It might be more viable if we had castle law which would allow us to actually protect our firearms in a more realistic fashion lol (my opinion)...but *rolls eyes* when and if that ever comes about.some people say never but i say never say never lol.

Perhaps people should get together and advertise in ways that do not scream " i got firearms right here right now " and or find ways to advertise without directly being identified as a gun owner for security reasons.

How would you do it without spending a fortune though?

It's not like a shooter can buy some air time and do a 'public awareness' ad on TV to say educate the masses on how're we're not all loonies.

Not knocking your spirit... Just, yeah... How could such a thing be done?

Agree AGree AGREE, also feal your frustration.
So let me play devils advocate.
Arguments comparng cars or alcohol to guns doesn't work.
You end up with "But you don't NEED a gun"
To which you reply "you don't NEED a car".
"Yes I do!" their just too blind to see the justification works both ways.
Same with mortality statistics.
I try to stay away from them (statistics), I work with enough numbers to realize you can PROVE ANYTHING with numbers, you just pick the ones you want.
Have you seen Steve Lee in Living With the Enemy?
It proved something I've known for ages and he admitted it at the end.
You CANNOT REASON with the Anti's, you cannot "Win the arguement"
Only one way to gain ground, overwelm them with numbers (head count not statistics)
Ignore reason and criticism and SHOUT LOUDER with emotion if possible.
Another thought.
Why don't we fight back? (Re: your "Why dont you guys have something to say about by dissertations for once")
Perhaps because we are like mistreated dogs.
We've been kicked once to often to risk putting our heads up.
BUT look around, the dogs are starting to growl, your doing it yourself!
Even if it doesn't look like it...support is growing, I guess you've seen Jenna's post.
Look at the Shooters and Fishers Party, first Victorian election they have stood and got 2 seats.
I took the Greens years to get 2 seats.
Do what you can, big or small, "Just Do It!" to steal a phrase.
We don't HAVE to agree on everything, we don't HAVE be one cohesive body.
We just have to stand up and be counted. = overwelming numbers.

 Bloody Hell .... just let me step down from this soapbox ...

And now for someting compleatly different ...... your thoughts :?:
There's always room for at least one more gun in my safe.
There's always room for one more safe in my house.

I think what he meant was, "Back in your hole with you, evil gun owner. Learn your place. Speak only in hushed tones in private places, and live in fear of discovery of your shameful ways."

If people listen to that type of reasoning, it's far more effective gun control than any law could ever achieve. Firearm ownership would come to an end in two generations.

I do have a lovely Christmas tale for you from The Great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania regarding advertising firearm ownership. The language is a little colorful, so I'll quote it directly. Enjoy! :)

I had an encounter in Hbg one evening before Christmas, close to the Whitaker Center.

A couple guys were shuffling past my wife & I, when the one stopped & said, "Yo, dat's a nice watch (I was wearing a Timex, ferchrissakes!). Why donchu gib it to me."
Naturally I said, "NO."
He says, "I bet if it wasn't so many people around, you'd gib it to me."
I said, "NO."
His buddy grabbed him & as he was pulling him away he said, "Yo is about the dumbest f---in' n---a' I eba saw. Dude be wearin a Glock hat & yo try to take his s**t!"
