Abbott's new bulletproof BMW - Designed to be AK-47 proof

Post by harlow » 19 Jan 2015, 8:54 am

Cutbacks, cutbacks, cutbacks... But not to the $500,000+ chauffeured BMW to take old Tony to the cricket. That's money well spent for the good of the country and it's citizens.

It's not quite The Beast, the legendary armoured limousine that protects the US President, but it can stop an AK-47 round or a roadside bomb blast.

And the hulking BMW armoured car worth at least $500,000 is now carrying Tony Abbott on his daily travels, delivering him to the Prime Minister's XI cricket match in Canberra on Wednesday.

Amid the heightened current terrorism alert, Mr Abbott's new ride is one of nine BMW armoured cars the government has bought under a $6.3 million contract, replacing the 12-year-old prime ministerial limo fleet of customised Holden Caprices.

The BMW 7 Series High Security cars were first used at the G20, ferrying world leaders around Brisbane, but have been phased into regular use over the holiday period.

The new V-12 prime ministerial fleet will be spread across the country and, when not needed by Mr Abbott, will be available for visiting VIPs such as foreign leaders and dignitaries.

According to the German auto giant's website, Mr Abbott's new car "meets the highest standards of ballistic protection", with bulletproof windows made from layers of laminated glass and polycarbonate coating, making them hard but flexible enough to absorb the impact of a bullet.

"It is the first vehicle specifically designed to protect against the world's most widely used firearm, the AK-47," the Munich-based firm's website states.

The armour plating is made from strengthened steel backed up by an interior made from sculpted synthetic fibres that are hard and heat resistant. It all forms "an impenetrable second skin", the website states.

Other safety features include tyres that remain inflated even when punctured, a self-sealing petrol tank, an attack alarm and an intercom system that allows the occupants to communicate with people outside without having to open the doors.

It replaces the 2003 V-8 Holden Caprice fleet, which was bought by former prime minister John Howard and was custom-fitted with bulletproof doors and windows, as well as an armoured floor and protected fuel tank.

The new cars were the subject of a political stoush with Labor questioning why Holden wasn't considered for the contract after it emerged that BMW did not bid in the original tender. Officials from the Attorney-General's department told recent Senate hearings the original tender winner turned out not to meet the "full requirements" and the department had to seek the best "value for money".

US President Barack Obama rides a customised General Motors Cadillac that the US Secret Service has nicknamed The Beast and famously carries several litres of blood of the President's type in the boot. It is estimated to weigh at least seven tonnes.

British Prime Minister David Cameron travels in an armoured, super-charged, five-litre Jaguar XJ Sentinel that reportedly can release tear gas to disperse an angry crowd. SMH

Yep, I've got the aussie version.

I have a mate who makes up venison sausages for me, three of them and about two hours or so later I can clear the crowd from any bar you wish to name.

GUARANTEED

I'm sure he puts something extra in them.

I'd bet my balls there is quite a few getting around Australia, very few of wich would be owned legally.

I don't blame any prime minister for getting such a vehicle, they are a prime target for terrorists.

Nice of them to publicise exactly what the limitations of the protection are... maintaining the record of smart decisions. Now they can try explaining why anyone would bother attempting assasination, superfluous mouthpieces are easily replaced. What a waste of money.

At least they don't need tear gas like the British version, with the external speakers anyone in the vicinity can be subjected to his oration. "Our paid parental leave scheme..." Argh!! run for the hills lads!

On a side note, (and hearsay) there's an interesting array of weaponry inside those government cars. The door trims come off to allow quick access to a small arsenal. That's assuming its the same as 20 years ago, a gov car broke down in Cockatoo, VIC. The mechanics and a few onlookers got to see how much was unloaded into a second vehicle before the car was left for repair.

Interesting side issue there.... Mr Abbott, do you have a licence or exemption under the official purposes etc etc for possession of _ _ _ _ _ _ (insert best guess of what arsenal is in car).

I wonder if the PM would be expected to grab a 45 pistol (there'd have to be a few in there) in a SHTF episode....

As far as the choice of vehicle, the issue was blown up by LABOR who themselves wrote the spec and went to tender, apparently Holden DID bid but with BAE systems and their proposal would have cost over twice the BMW cost.

consider BMW have been producing these as a STANDARD line for years, obviously on an order basis, you wouldnt find one in the Melbourne BMW showroom of course....

Whether or not you like Abbott, or whichever mouthpiece is in his place, would you really want our representative to get around in a cobbled together Holden test-bed, with AR plates welded together after hours and weekends at fishermans bend?? a shortened lithy 303 in each door, just for the sake of 'keeping it Australian'... No, not really.
