130-year-old 'gun that won the West' found

Would making your hiking trip walking along and finding this :D

US experts are scratching their heads after finding a more than 130-year-old Wild West rifle leaning against a tree in a remote area of a national park.

The Winchester Model 1873 firearm was found in Great Basin National Park in Nevada by a park employee, Eva Jensen, who happened to be working in the area with an archaeology team.

Exposed for years to the elements, the rifle's cracked wood stock was "weathered to grey", while the brown rusted barrel "blended into the colours of the old juniper tree", officials said.

Tucked into a remote rocky outcrop, the rifle appeared to have remained "hidden for many years," they said in a statement.

The gun's serial number indicates that it was made and shipped in 1882. But beyond that, it remains a mystery.

"Who left the rifle? When and why was it leaned against the tree? And why was it never retrieved?" the statement said, adding that experts were poring over old newspapers and family histories to search for where it may have come from.

The Winchester Model 1873 rifle holds a prominent place in local history - it's referred to as "the gun that won the West".

More than 720,000 were manufactured between 1873 and 1916.

The gun was not loaded when it was found, but would have held .44-40 calibre ammunition when in use. © AFP 2015

Some poor bastard probably leaned it up against a tree, had a dump about twenty feet away then looked for hours but couldn't find it.

Amazing how no one else found before then.

Was probably taking a dump and an indian war party came riding past so he made for cover and got the flock out of there.

Seems obvious looking at it in the photo but it's a big ass forest.

What were the chances of actually wondering past it to start, not much it seems.

The Gold is buried right under the rifle next to the juniper tree, make sure you don't move it or the gold will be lost for ever!!!

Took a while but some logic will come into the mix....

That tree is what 30, 50 years old?? so maybe someone found an old rifle... thought shiiiiiii this is useless and propped in on the tree, all of 2 and a half year ago.

NOW some enviro-new-age-archaeologically-inspire graduate ranger type has made a 130year old discovery

so maybe I'll grad a 1905 enfield, rust it up good and proper in a salt solution, take it out to the forest then 'discover' a pre-WW1 rifle, untouched for over a century

It's a legitimate find. The juniper trees in that area are said to be very old. Like up to a thousand years old or more

It is hard to pick sometimes, we have these trees down here called huon pine, some are 10,000 years old, they don't look it (but who am I to say what a 10,000 year old tree is meant to look like).
