Vic gun thieves eavesdrop on cops to target firearms

Post by AusC » 14 May 2015, 11:24 am

This never occurred to me (not thinking like a criminal) but seems a glaringly obvious weakness now that I've read it.

:problem:

Criminals listening to Victoria Police conversations on analog radios are tracking firearms safety officers and breaking into homes they visit to steal guns.

Acting chief commissioner Tim Cartwright said an upgrade of the radio system - now on its way - was much needed.

'This was the greatest threat to the operational safety of our members, particularly in rural Victoria,' he told a public accounts and estimates committee on Tuesday.

Firearms safety officers had to stop telling the operations room where they got out of their cars to check on secured guns.

'(Because) soon after that visit, we (would) have the property burgled,' he said.

Police Minister Wade Noonan said the government had provided $11.5 million to upgrade the rural radio system, with Victoria Police finding a further $23.8 million.

'This was the greatest threat to the operational safety of our members, particularly in rural Victoria,' ........

No, its not... it is however the greatest threat to the members of the public who you broadcast on open radio as having firearm ripe for the picking, securely locked away so they cant be used AGAINST a prospective home invader....

Yes, but dont worry about the common people who dont have the added safety of a tax payer funded self defence pistol on their belt.

Why does a report about the security of 'firearm inspectors' become associated with terror threats and therefore police now patrol in pairs??? Any opportunity hey Firearm owners/terrorism association....

The easiest most cost effective solution is to stop inspecting law abiding and start inspecting the criminals firearm storage.....that wouldnt work because apparently the crims already know you're coming !!!

Why don't you guys just become criminals? Seems a lot less complicated and you would be safer from both the criminals and the police who seem to be working together for a common goal!

So was the senate enquiry told that one of the major sources for stolen guns is a direct consequence of the current gun laws?
What is Vic Pol doing to protect us LAFOs from the criminals that they themselves are bringing to our doors?
“'(Because) soon after that visit, we (would) have the property burgled,' he said.”
If that is a direct quote from an acting chief commissioner it’s tantamount to an admission of culpability.
An insurance company lawyer could have a field day with that one.

I can hear my local police. I won't say how, but, it ain't a scanner. You'd be surprised at what they say "over the air" sometimes instead of using mobile phones (no reception maybe?).

Criminals will always find ways of doing their deeds.

In NSW, every public servant with a computer had months and months of access to a restricted database. There's no way that this was a simple mistake.

God knows what information was taken and was/might be used one day.

I'm starting to think that personal defense of your home and person with a firearm should be allowed.

10 4 good buddy,
It's interesting that it's primarily regional police using “analogue” may as well be CB radios.
FFS we snitched off analogue TV last year!
…” upgrade of the radio system - now on its way - was much needed.”
Yu mean like their new side arms, which I think still hasn’t been done.
The roll out of Tasers, station upgrades , now becoming closures etc.
Like our Roads, Public transport and just about anything else you could name thet is supposed to “benefit” the public … forget it .
But pay a fortune and roll out better speed cameras … no problem no delay.

It's blindingly obvious that the single biggest threat to our firearm security is the police force and firearms branch.

Fancy broadcasting sensitive information over the two way radio.

damn right, the police should have zero involvement in the regulation and licensing of firearms, their Australasian Police minister's conference wasnt the work of a politician (minister) but the police...... and licensing?? Both of these activities are run by a highly biased group who have an explicit wish of reducing the firearms in the 'community'.

Sometimes I'd really like to see, just one of the current police, who trawl these pages.... to comment just once.

Nope, but, I have heard "we're going off at xyz street for a firearms inspection."

My neighbors think that I've got expensive guitars (I use the large plastic rifle cases, not soft bags). Fender stickers on them also.

As I irritate them a lot with my attempt at mimicking a guitar player (drum machine included), I think I'm slightly off the radar.

Did I say I hate the media??.... random stock photo of Beretta 92... "A hand gun lying on a table with bullets around it, September 2007. Good gun, weapon generic." Relevance zero, as usual...of course cartridges isnt as sexy as 'bullets'

The beat up:
"QPS did not elaborate on how the two firearms initially went missing, but said they were "recovered within a short space of time"."

So in other words they were recovered quickly, but the image of the horrible pistol with random 9mm rounds and the headline GUNS......lost....stolen....really 'sells it' for these parasites...

ON the matter of 'misplacing' prohibited items, we, as mere citizen would have our proverbials reamed if WE lost them, not that we're trustworthy enough for such items of mass genocide like body armour..

The best part of the story though;

Assistant Commissioner O'Reagan said high-risk equipment is kept under tight control.

OK, what does he describe as tight control??

"We take security of all restricted items very seriously..............My handcuffs and baton are checked every three months ...."

every 3... thats THREE months!!!
dang wheres my baton gone, I only checked it last year!! :unknown:

The cops these days lack initiative.

They could catch some crooks by setting up a sting by announcing an inspection at some bogus address and then sit and wait or put some sort of monitoring to catch them in the act.

No, the really scarey bit is the fact it is an on going thing, year after year!
The number of missing items last year is comparable to the last five years.

I dunno if anyone knows... But who would initiate an operation like that?

I guess the average cop on the street doesn't have the authority to do it and is just doing the orders that come down the line.

Is there anyone at a station level who could start such a thing? Or only the higher ups?

Why go to bother setting up sting operations for criminals when they can trawl facebook and bust legitimate LAFOs on trumped up charges.

This will end up being shame on who ever jumped to conclusions about this photo on face value and a public apology may follow.

This apparently was NOT a crime. A culled animal for a farmer as per discussions on AHN by people in the know.
