I think the point is that overall murder rates are averaged over the population, apart from them being stats which can be interpreted (and corrupted) they are effectively of little significance apart from an indication....in the USA its 4 per 100k population averaged over all people (not regions).... but there are cities with rate equivalent to our rate about 1 per 100k, some even lower eg New Hampshire at 0.9/100k BUT at the some time there are cities like Chicago with very high rates, and States with varying rates, as high as 15.9 per 100k in DC!!! Some smaller geographic areas will have rates a lot higher than DC...

Its ridiculous to generalise over the huge region of the USA, and huge population and say 'the nation' has a crime problem - that New Hampshire has the the crime problem of DC....

Just like the Tassy example, if all the murders occurred on the island, yes, the nation average would reflect it, but the problem is in Tassy, not the mainland.

<<Genesis93>> wrote:Has been trending down for a long time, but it is the inconvenient truth that doesnt fit the "gun crime out of control" narrative. The USA is one of the most populous nations, so with lots of humans.... human nature brings violence... unfortunately.. But every gun death is beaten to death in the media, conveniently overlooking all other deaths and forms of violence. Why is there no heart disease or cancer or road fatality epidemic??

Very good point. Rarely does anyone take into consideration the population count, or ratio (unless of course it works in their favour - which in this case it doesn't).

It's looking as though this could possibly be a terrorist act anyway - didn't stop Obama from jumping in quick smart to promote his anti-gun propaganda.

If he wants to disarm guns, I propose he leads by example - when he leaves the whitehouse his bodyguards should be unarmed. See how good that would go down. It's always easy to promote restrictions when you have an exception to the rule...

No vehicular deaths either apparently.

No robberies gone bad (unless a gun was involved).

But the hysteria is dumbfounding...... in their rush to call for 'action on gun control', they totally missed the fact that these individuals were killed (secondary to the need for gungrabbage), the fact that they were in a gunfree zone, and above all the guns were already banned - it is illegal to have such semi-auto, illegal to buy / own / possess / transport.... but the rifles were bought 'legally' ....

Enter selective information and manipulation of the facts;

"Now federal agencies say the two assault rifles (they were DPMS model and a Smith & Wesson MMP 15and two handguns) used in the bloodshed (dramatic emotive and unnecessary language - check) were perfectly legal purchases.(It's not WHAT you say - its what you DON'T say - CA-banned, therefore bought INTERSTATE and illegally brought into CA!)

Investigators are now trying to build a trail to the last legal purchaser, according to Meredith Davis of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Davis adds that all four firearms had been bought four years ago. She did not divulge information on where exactly they were bought and at what point they ended up with Farook and Malik.

The full court press is on to mimic Australia's gun control.

Saw somewhere today (can't find where now) - that an organisation has done research into the Mass shootings in America and there's a common trend between where they occur and 'Gun Free Zones', or easy target areas. (aka, not those with liberal gun laws and CC options). Would be interested to see if that is the case. (Sounds reasonable).

We don't need them right now, but no reason to get complacent.

Well, about 60% of murders in the US are by firearm. Regarding OZ laws, we only have about 100 people killed per year by "assault weapons." Interestingly, we only have about 100 people killed per year in "mass shootings." That's actually a coincidence, not a match. Most people killed in mass shootings in the US are killed by handguns. The most prominent example being the worst mass shooting on US soil since the early 1900s, Virginia Tech. Two handguns, no "high capacity mags."

Of course, Europe has had at least two mass shootings in the past 5 years worse than anything the US has ever seen. And, as previously stated, the US ranks 5th compared to Europe, OZ, and Canada for per capita deaths to mass shootings in the past 10 years or so. Which should not be surprised since we have about 340 million people and only have about 100 deaths a year. It's the least likely way to die in the US after Mad Cow disease I would expect.

I could NOT find any break down of rifle murders stats, there were 248 murders where a 'rifle' was used..... californian assault type could have been 100 of those, more likely fewer, 50? 31?? over the whole of the nation, consider that then look at the relentless drive to ban 'assault weapons'..............

It has little to do with the 'weapons'.....That is what should absolutely concern every freedom loving American, a government so vehemently opposed to semi Auto rifles where although they do cause harm, in a population of 300,000,000, the statistic, IF KNOWN what technically be considered insignificant and therefore irrelevant for all statistical intents and purposes.

With regard to the media outcry, the NYT refers to 90 deaths a day....that the total firearm homicide AND suicide - it makes my blood bol to see these cretins lump suicide in there, further more they totally discount the 10,000 plus suicides where a firearm was not use.... total suicide 41,149, just like they discount the murders where a firearm wasnt used (30+%)

There is an epidemic all right... a suicide epidemic, not so much a firearm, an certainly by no stretch of the imagination an assault rifle murder epidemic.

Now the actual rifles used at SanB, it is reported that they were indeed purchased in Cali, San Diego I recall.... apparently you can purchase, legally an AR15 with a 'bullet button', which is a mag release that requires a tool (or bullet tip) to remove the mag (=fixed mag rifle :unknown: ) which is legal, refer to above cali law, provided the mag is no more than 10 rds.

Conveniently. Theyre now purchased legally - in California. It is said however that the varients shown in the crime scene pics are not to bullet button variants.... its also been said, very suspiciously, referred to more so, that ATFE indicated the rifle were purchased on behalf of the Police..... mentioned by Carly Fiorina.

It was reported the rifles were 'modified' (illegal) probably referring the bullet button replacement, and they 'tried' to convert them to full auto.

The reports of the ammo... thousand rounds here  2 thousand rounds there   'few hundred' of these especially scary and what must be a type of long range sniper round these 22 long rifle bullet ammunitions

Hope they dont audit the average Aussie shooters, pick up a few 22rimfire bricks, when, you know, theyre on special and you've got a veritable pre war ammo stockpile of 2 thousand rounds..... and dont come by after the bi-annual 223 and 308 reloading session :)

anyhoo, possible sourcing of rifle FOR police IS interesting, especially on recollection of a certain fast and furious.....this will go away quicker than you can say 'Senate passed motion'....

I think when the presstitutes go all 'Mass shootings everyday' theyre referring to multiple shootings, and it doesnt need to be fatal, a shooting is not a homicide, necessarily.

Imaging if they reported every multiple fatality vehicle incident, the papers would be solely a road incident report sheet...

and the other frequently reported 'school shootings'.... I understand it can involve an actual shooting with injury, a shooting without injury, a brandishing, any offence involving firearms for say carrying and it doesnt even have to be inside the school ground. If the 'offence' or reported incident occurred with some hundred of feet or more within the vicinity of the school it is another stat added to the 'school shooting' reprots.....maybe our American friends can confirm or quash this...

It's true on the "school shooting" numbers. They include gang violence a few blocks away, teachers killing themselves at home, nobody shot, somebody thought they heard a shot and called the cops, you name it. These are anti statistics, NOT FBI statistics.

We have high school rifle teams, it wouldn't surprise me to learn they count practice events and competitions (that's a joke)
