They cant all be bad, But it does reiterate the point that "Gen93" has made in other threads that the police should not be the only ones entrusted with the POWER of firearms control...!!

“Accidental Discharges” DO NOT OCCUR !!

An "Unintended Discharge" is nothing more than the lack of appropriate safety procedures or the failure to follow them..!

Victorian TOG [Highway Patrol] are widely and justifiably regarded by ordinary Coppers and civilians alike as s#itbags, tattoos on hands and necks and such, they are a breed apart.
A year ago i was pulled over by a female one who who placed her right hand on my drivers door sill so I could not miss BOHICA, jail tattooed across the web of her hand between index finger and thumb.
I was accused of blocking the right lane but that story rapidly changed to unsafe lane change when I pointed out that I would be using GPS data, she is a liar and a feral bogan with a badge.
Your general duties Victorian Copper is IME a completely different breed, I have assisted them and they have assisted me, I help them if possible but if I saw a Togger being beaten on the side of the road I would drive on.
Last time I interacted with the NSW highway patrol would have to be 20 yrs back, this d**khead hopped out of his " interceptor" dressed in motorcycle leggings, jodhpurs, mirror sunglasses and leather cap !
He plainly lived in a cartoon, probably got slapped at school by blokes like me for being a dobber.
We actually had a creature like that a Maitland Boys High School back in '67, "Dobber O 'Connor" he ended up being a Copper but then so did "Jackie" Gleason who was a great bloke.

I've got serious reservations about the NSW police after me contacting them a while back.

I supplied them with a name of a property owner,, the address,, and a list of firearms and ammunition,, that were stored in an unlocked wardrobe
at the property.

The owner lived elsewhere (that address was also supplied) and only attended the property once or twice per year over a weekend.

The owner was unlicensed, and the firearms were unregistered.

Despite my information, the police never visited or acted on the information in any way.

I had previously spoken to the owner on several occasions, pointing out that he really needed to get his act together and become legal.
He simply ignored the opportunity to do so, and and the situation did not change.
I couldn't sleep well at night, thinking that as a result of his actions, some poor person may end up dead.
That is why I did what I did,,,,,,,,, but like I already said,, The NSW police did not act on the information.

I do not fear death itself... Only its inopportune timing!

Was he involved in criminal activity or just a bloke that doesn't agree with licencing and registration?
Maybe NSW Police are actually prioritising taking firearms off criminals rather than turning an otherwise lawfull person into a criminal purely because a law was written that he should be?
For a very, very long time all Australian firearms owners "secured" their firearms exactly this way, and no harm ever came of it.

I'm all for a "use a gun, go to jail" law, not so much for simply stealing one though.

I mean't in criminal activity :-)

Somebody who merely steals a firearm because he likes firearms, or wants to hunt but can't get licenced, is very different to somebody who steals a firearm to use as a weapon to intimidate or injure other people.

Pushing for stealing a firearm to be treated the same is just perpetuating the myth that stolen legally-owned firearms is where criminals get their guns from.

I'm pretty sure you mean 'use a gun in a crime' and go to jail......

But not for stealing one?? How should stealing be dealt with? a stern talking to? perhaps sit in the naughty corner?
No. Steal a gun - do time.... and lose an arm perhaps for a first offence, leg for second, head for third. They might think twice next time, their mates might also consider changing their ways.

Bout time we had a judiciary that had some sense.... punished the wrong do-ers

That's because it's cheaper to make us pay for storage and security than it is to keep thieves locked up at about 110k a year.

Stealing a gun should be treated exactly the same as stealing any property.
If they steal it with _intent_ to commit a violent crime then the penalties should be _extremely_ harsh. If you traffic a stolen gun, or even a legally-owned gun, to somebody that then uses it for violent crime then that should also be dealt with extremely harshly.

And I agree, penalties for all crimes against people are pathetic these days.

In Perth twenty years ago, a good friend's sister was murdered at her work by her estranged husband with a rifle stolen from his father.
And more recently, two drug addict dealers went hunting for my daughter one night due to some perceived slight (she probably accused them of being users and dealers - this pair are Dumb and Dumber on ice!) and when they found she didn't live at the house they'd gone to, they fired a round into the front door frame with a 686 revolver. They both got a couple years inside is all. An interesting-but-not-gun-related side story from that one is that the detective I delivered the dealers' mobile phone to (which had photos of them playing with the weapon and ammo they used) was very soon afterwards charged with _many_ child pornography offences, and convicted.

Goodluck finding one :(

You think YOU got it hard? just in time for our Presidential election the Governor of the "Great" State of Virginia, a member of the Democratic Party, just signed Executive Orders restoring the voting rights of Two Hundred and Six Thousand, 206,000, CONVICTED FELONS.!!!!

Virginia is expected to be a swing state this election year and nearly with a total population of approximately 8,300,000 people you can see how that 206,000 CONVICTED FELONS voting can have an effect on the outcome. In 2012 the vote in Virginia was approximately 1,900,000 for the Democrat candidate and 1,800,000 for the Republican candidate. So since the odds are the CONVICTED FELONS will vote Democratic I'm sure you can see where this is heading.

There is however a lawsuit attempting to stop his blanket executive order from taking affect.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

Felons they may be but at least they can choose to vote or not vote without penalty. If I choose not to vote it costs me a $55 penalty, the Aussie version of democracy is "Do it or be fined".

A quick read shows that our crims can vote if serving less than 3 years. If serving more then 3 years they can't vote which seems fair and reasonable considering our 4 year term for federal politicians. Not sure what the democrats are up to with this one, suspicious to change voting eligibility so close to an election. Maybe they are running scared.
