Shed find - old knife with broken blade

Post by alby » 22 Dec 2016, 5:21 pm

Continuing of the shed cleanout at dad's has unearthed this.

I remember digging this up on the roadside out the front of home. My best guess would be about 1979 when i was 7. I found it then in it's current condition, and did a good job of hiding it lol.

Apparently it was my older brother's. He'd bought it in the early 70s and lost it.

I wouldn't mind finding someone to make a new blade for it.

What a great excuse to try your hand at making a blade.
If you don't have the equipment to do it yourself or can't be stuffed there are some knife makers around that could knock something up for you.
There is one in Hahndorf SA.

Great looking handle and bolsters.
Gun control requires concentration and a steady hand

Have a look around there are companies that have knife blanks already to attach handles too, not sure about that particular set up but work further investigation or you could probably get one of the knifemakers to do something with the handles for you.

Deernaster over on AHN makes some nice knives and may be able to help (AHN is Australian Hunting Network) he's a nice fella and only too happy to help I would imagine.

you may have trouble with the handle, she seems a bit worn and while that adds to the charm it can be a bugger to fix up,,as "on one wheel" said you can get a professional to fix it or have a go yourself,,id go with the "do it your self" option, buy a bit of steel, hit it with the cutting blade, grind it to shape, heat treat (heatbeads and a hair dryer) file and sand, a bit of glue and your done

there may be a little bit more to it than that  but youtube can fill in the blanks :D let us know how it goes

Pulled it apart. Handle pretty strong. Even the leather spacers still ok. Some numbering on the tang looks like S 558 5/1 or 511.

Last pic is a blade found online which might suit.

That's the way I'd be going mate, worth further investigation at the least but looks like it would work alright.

You'll need some pretty good measurements of the baulster nut and know what the dimensions on your replacement tang are.

The blade on that knife was most likely clip point with a deep sabre grind (like a Bowie), if you want to get it back close to the original, which was obviously poorly tempered and too brittle. I recognise to kind of knife. There were heaps of them around for sale in the 80's and they weren't expensive. While the handle have a certain charm, a custom replacement for the blade will likely be expensive.

Thanks Gwion. Yeah I figure a custom blade job would be expensive. Given I wouldn't put it to much practical use, more just for aesthetic and sentimental purposes, I might have a go at knocking something up.

Another possible option is I have a good mate in England whose son is a smithy and specialises in armour and swords. I might give him a bell after the silly season.

Could also be a case of the Brother using it to pry something,, and stretching the friendship a tad too far.

True, but a well tempered blade should stand up to a bit of that sort of abuse without snapping. I was just pointing out that is is a sign of a cheaper knife and spending a heap of cash rebuilding what was a pretty ordinary, cheap, basic knife is kind of money and time wasted.

Totally agreed, but a lot of refurbishments, restorations cost quite a bit regardless.

And if your doing it for sentimental reasons,,, who gives a sh!t how much it costs.
As long as the owner is happy.
