22 starter gun

Post by Mitch@Ripley » 13 Sep 2017, 9:45 am

Hey everyone, I'm looking at buying a starter gun for a small frame, 14 YO girl. I have a list of specs that need to be considered but not strictly followed. She has used both a Marlin xt-22 as well as a Lithgow La101. the Lithgow is, as you could guess, a little too heavy for her, however she says that it is the most comfortable to hold (shape wise). The Marlin is a great rifle however it can't quite deliver the performance we need, as it also needs to be handed down to my nephews once they are old enough.

SPECS:

Must be .22LR

Uses:
- Silhouette comps
- Field Rifle (in a year or so)
- Training (Safety and performance)
- Hunting (Mainly rabbits and birds, a few foxes at close range)

Action: Anything but semi-automatic, preferably not pump for maintenance purposes.

Weight: 2>3kg bare, there is a minimum as anything under that would cause a lack of control, she has tried one of those tiny savage single shots and hated it.
Length of Pull: between 275 and 375 mm, adjustable would be great

Barrel: 18<22" preferably hybrid/medium contour but that isn't imperative. Stainless or cerakote finish ideally

Stock: Anything that can handle a few knocks, probably synthetic, again not imperative.

Trigger: <4.5 pound adjustable or <3.25 pound fixed

must have at least 5 rounds
must have capability for scope
preferable to have iron sights

Under $1200, we have a scope and rings already

You don't have to worry about semi-auto, unless you have a cat C license it's off the table anyway.

My 2c - Have a look at a Savage Mkii or Ruger American Rimfire, both seem to fit the bill.
It'll shoot the fleas off a dog's back at five hundred yards, Tannen, and it's pointed straight at your head!

I really want the Henry Youth 16" barrel and under 2kg, and has scope dovetails.

But your wish list sounds like the Ruger American Compact or Standard. Get the the extra stock inserts and it gives you adjustment of 12.5" to 13.75", adjustable trigger, iron sights, dovetails as well as drilled for pic rail.
Also probably enough of them around that you should be able to find somebody to let you/her try it out.

Google the "PWS T3" which are around the $1050 mark new. Should fit all your needs apart from having iron sights and they're very accurate.

I can agree.
At least even take a look cause it will give you something to compare to. get her to hold it at the gunshop and see if it fits

I wouldn't buy a Marlin XT-22 for your needs, I own one and good fun, cheap and great for bashing round the ute. I had to free float mine to achieve a reasonable accuracy.

What about a sporter barrel CZ. I believe they also make a youth model. Well within your budget.

I own a cz 455 which came as a package with all 3 rimfire barrels .22lr, 17hmr , 22wmr, you can pick these packages up for the kind of money you mention or less they are available in stainless now i believe with synthetic stock offers good versatility down the track if youre going after bigger pests, as with all cz rifles the build quality and accuracy are outstanding and will be a rifle that will last for generations

CZ 455 Camp Rifle - https://www.winchesteraustralia.com.au/ ... ZKM455CAMP

It has iron sights - rear being an aperture - length of pull is adjustable with spacers - it has the usual CZ grooved receiver.

You would have to buy a mag though because it comes with a single shot adapter.

Click on the smaller photos below the main one and they blow up nicely.

As Brett said, check out the PWS T3. Super light rifle, short carbon wrapped barrel, Ruger mags, quick straight pull action on a Boyd's stock. Too light for silhouette for me, but I'm a 6'1" bloke, I'll stay with my Lithgow.

Yup that's a really cool little rifle; love the rear diopter! I'd be tempted to grab on of those for myself!

Just a thought, what about. BL-22? Light, compact and suitable for hunting and silhouette work in both RMS and CLAS

As you may guess from my name - I have one - it's nice - if only my oculars were younger it'd shoot lights-out.
