Bluing touch up

Post by AusTac » 05 Jan 2018, 10:52 pm

Any of you fellas used those bluing touch up pens? Not looking to do anything extravagant just touch up a few marks from where scope rings slipped under recoil, real world experience? Yeah or naah?

I dont have any experience with them but think why not try it, I'd be interested in how it went

I haven't tried the touch up pens but I've had great success with Birchwood Casey cold building compound applied with a cotton tip.

Years ago, so maybe they've gotten better.

It blued the surface obviously, but did kind of look like you'd drawn in on with the pen. Was a noticeable patch where it was fixed.

I prefer a regular bottle and cloth so you can wipe it in overlapping layers and blend it in more.

Not a pen.

Done touch ups with the stuff in a bottle you wipe on. You can see it's been patched up but as far as the protective coating goes it's just fine.

I know its been a while since i posted this but a while ago i bought the pen and have experimented on a carbon steel opinel and it did blue but also went real rusty like yellowy orange normal rusty, so 2000 grit sandpaper got that off and now it looks all old and cool lookin' i did try it on my air rifle which was my intended victim after it recoiled the scope mounts off which scratched the blueing, not sold so far might try what you guys suggested with the cream :)

I did an entire rifle with the Birchwood Casey cild bluing paste.
I rubbed and polished all the steel to a good even finish with fine wet and dry before applying the paste.

It came up realy well after the 3rd application.
