Anyone regretted buying mud terrain tires when on the road?

Post by Wes » 15 Jan 2018, 10:35 am

I get no tire does everything the best. When you read the reviews about mud vs a/t there's lots of comments like:

"relatively good"
"good considering"
"good for mud tyres"

All fair enough.

Forgetting relative performance though, anyone bought mud tires and just thought "nup, these are terrible on the road".

Didn’t buy them as replacements but the old Dunlop Roadtrek Major (cross ply) that Toyota insisted on fitting to new cruiser’s and hilux’s were perhaps THE worst tyre ever made for ANY purpose!
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

i got some copper STT's on my 4b when i went to north east vic a lot during winter, they were great in the mud, and for about 30000 km's they were impressively quiet on the road, But as the km's wore on and the tread wore down they gradually become more noisy on the road, as muddies do. I eventually broke a band in one of them and that one was really noisy, but still got about 80000 km's out of them ( even with broken band in one )before i replaced them with cooper AT3 heavy duty, soo much quieter than the STT's, but no doubt will be slip n slide in the mud....

When i start doing more trips to NE vic in winter again, i'll probably buy another set of rims, and fit them with cooper STT Pro's, and keep the stock rims with the AT3's for round town, highway, light off road and towing use.

I run 2 sets of rims, one lot fitted with Cooper STT and one lot that are normally on the 4by with standard highway tyres (i think they are Dunlops of some sort). Mud tyres are expensive and wear out to quickly on the bitumen and are also too noisy.

I do however, have a hoist in the shed, so changing them over only takes about 20 mins. before a trip.

This isn't what you asked but I figure it's going to be the answer to your ultimate question.

You're trying to decide whether to give mud-terrain tires a go or not, I assume. And you're running all-terrain rubber at the moment.

Disappointment is based on your expectations, whether you'll regret it or not depends on how you expected them to perform to start with. That's tricky if you've never had mud tires before because you don't have any frame of reference and really just pick some arbitrary benchmarks in your head.

This is one of those things you can't work out from reviews or commentary.

1/3 will tell you m/t are crap on-road.
1/3 will tell you they're manageable.
1/3 will tell you they're perfectly fine.

They're all telling you the truth as they see it. It depends where they've set the bar.

My 2c, if you're interested give them a go. Then you've got the experience and will know. Worse case to come out of it is you'll have a set of tires you don't love for a while, then you go back to your a/t's.

I'm of the same mind as Wheelbarrow.

I've run the original BFG A/T KOs for years and always been happy with them. I have been umming and ahhing over giving their KM2 Mud-Terrains a go next time, but worrying about road handling in the wet, emergency stopping etc.

I finally decided screw it!

I'll be due for a new set in the coming months and am going to give them a crack. Vroom!

I ran BFG KOs (ATs) for 6 years and last year upgraded to the new KM2 M/Ts.
Barely noticed the difference in road noise, handles the same on the road.

Not my daily drive, dedicated hunting rig so around 6000km a year.

They're out in the US I've read.

Feedback so far is good. A lot quieter than the KM2 on the road and just as aggressive in the mud.

I have Km2 on front of Nav and Mickys mt on rear,km2 are reasonably noisy but handle good in dry and not to bad in damp roads in really wet of course they perform great,a lot better than the standard Duellers it came with even on the just normal wet roads.I tried the Duellers on the front after the ones that came standard wore out but even though they had nearly twice the depth of tread of tyres that came with new car were no better and lasted no longer than others.Got about 30000 on Km2 and 50000 on mickys will get at least 20000 more out of both.

Hey Hugh,

Why did you choose to go different front and back?

I used to run mud terrain tyres when I was a young fella, I remember them being bloody noisy and crap in the wet, these days I just run A/T's and I'm much happier with those, can't say I miss the M/T's at all and won't be going back too them.

I have an FJ Cruiser Toyo and have a set of steel Patrol rims I picked up for $100 - same offset - and put the cheapest Chinese muddies on em - $150 each.
They are great in the wet or dry and are not noisy. They wear quickly though. I bought them for offroading only but kept them on full time - they are perfectly predictable. Still have stock rims/tyres in the shed.
