mine are made with a type of keel that is screwed and glued under the top and held by the vice, it surprised me how solid they are, very rigid
Image
my tops are 600mm x 900mm because that is half the plank length that I bought from bunnings
to be honest another 100mm wouldn't hurt in length but it is long enough
Image
I'm very happy with them

I just used 2 bolts with wing nuts. They go through the gap in the vice. Cant tell you the size I'm away for a few days. But could be bigger though. It's just the size of the ply I had.
I like the idea of using the vice to clamp it in place.

Thought id join the ranks of the home made portable shooting bench owners...

So oldbloke...figured id come clean with my plagiarism now before i unwittingly upload a pic that lands me a letter from your solicitor... :drinks:

I got the work bench when marksman made his, & a couple of weeks ago the green shed had 17mm structural ply for $40 so i threw one on the roof.

I finally got around to putting them together.
I made 2, & i have enough ply left to make a third top...ill leave 1 or 2 on farms i frequent where they can double as camp table around fire when cooking etc, & ill carry the 3rd when i need to.

They're pretty sturdy & comfortably fit 2 rifles on the top.
Just gotta coat it in something & make a slip in shelf for the bottom to keep other items off the ground...
It'll make a pleasant change from over the bonnet or the camp table that sways around in wind.

Well my top is just a 2.4m x 1.2m sheet cut across the length in thirds ...so its 800w x 1200 long.
Initially i cut it thinking itll be too big & ill have to cut it down, but it will fit in the car comfortably with the camp table.

I also built mine as yours--with the "keel" but didnt glue it because im a commitment fobe...
Ill also see how i go with the radius cutout i have--your almost square-ish notch mite be the go...we'll see...

Im thinking the same re camo & distance sniping--i was even thinking some military style camo shade cloth over the top would be a treat...!

This is getting exciting...!! :P
Bet when i get it out in the paddock there'll be no rabbits...!!!

Thats not as funny as it sounds actually...
I once put a stainess barrel camo stock rifle down resting up against a 4ish ft high shrub...
Even out in the open we both had to really look for it, & we both walked right by it twice...

No, but I have cut a couple of notches in the bench top and can use it like a rifle rack now.
