The expansion and contraction of your stock is less than pretty much anything else that we paint. Heavy coat of 2K , or single pack urethane, or anything else that sets and is waterproof (geez brush on Araldite lol) will do.
All you are trying to do is prevent moisture going in and out of the raw wood.
(Which makes me wonder why the hell factory wood stocks have raw wood in the inlet area, for the sake of 1min masking and 10 cents of cheap oil or varnish...? I have seen some with a great external finish and raw wood inside. Shoddy)
