Akkar Churchill Trap

Hi All,

New member here. Haven't been actively shooting for several years now. I was a keen full bore target shooter for a long time.

I decided recently to get back into shooting. Figured I'd have a go at sporting clays. I've shot clays a few times using friends guns and before the buyback in the late 90's I had a mossberg pump that I used to take out from time to time. I used to enjoy getting out for a shot and I figure it'll be a good opportunity to reconnect with friends and have a bit of fun. Always liked a bit of friendly competition.

As a novice I figured I didn't want to spend a whole heap of money up front but I wanted something good quality with good features. After reading a bunch of reviews I settled on the Akkar Churchill Trap, It felt OK on my shoulder in the shop and the buld quality seems decent. Hopefully it'll shoot OK for me.

Mine was older stock and came in a cardboard box. The new ones come in a nice molded plastic case.

I picked up a vintage style break down case off eBay for it and it fits nicely in my small car boot.

Really keen to get out and shoot this thing. Hopefully I won't embarrass myself.

Any pointers for a new shooter turning up to a club? I've shot a Seymour Field and Game a couple of times about 20 years back. Figured I'd go there again.

Cheers

Mike

Very nice mate, I'm sure you will enjoy it, I'm sure there will be someone at the club who will show you the ropes on how to shoot clays (great fun) there are lots of vids on youtube about the sport too that are worth watching so have a look there too. :drinks:

I have the Churchill combo and most of the clays I've shot with it were of the feathered variety. One thing I have noticed with the Akkar is they rust easily so give it a good coat of oil before storing then check and re-oil from time to time.

Hi

Just wondering how you got along with this gun?

I'm in the market for a trap gun for my boy who has just started to really get keen on smashing clays and my gun has too long a LOP for him. The new model has an adjustable comb which will be handy, and is less than 1/2 the price of a silver pigeon. Given taht (1) I'm going to need to cut he stock down for his LOP and then add back on as he grows, and (2) that he might lose interest, I'm struggling to justify spending what is required to jump up to a Browning/Beretta......

Bought my young teenage son a cheap ATA 686 - he loves it. (So do I when he’s not using it)
Think they are very similar to akka.
Most important thing for me was the absolute basics...safety x 100000...kids forget s**t...most 12g clay guns don’t lock safety on when closed, so little things like that, I felt important to ramp home.
My son was used to air rifles and .22’s and consequently he was trying to aim the 12g as opposed to getting in synch and pointing the gun...big difference.

Hi. Yep safety first each time, every time. I've been drilling it into my boy from day 0. He's actually getting pretty good and mad keen, good coaching helps

I've been burnt in the past buying expensive stuff that ends up being unused and then needing to either let it collect dust or sell it so I'm not quite willing to drop a fat wedge of cash just yet, but I know that he needs a gun that fits him.......

Yes, I know that frustration very well!!!!nothing like sinking a heap of coin into something to watch it then depreciate...cough cough trail bikes.

Thing is with clays - you can learn to shoot any gun.
Disclaimer here - I’m a newbie and can’t shoot for s**t. Two weeks ago my son was using the ATA at practice and I thought I’d have a crack with my old grandfathers side by side baikal- it’s as loose as a footballers pants on final nifht and knock me dead with a feather, I nailed 21 from 25 on first round. Not A grade, but pretty good for me. I even scored 19 on the “where the fug did that go” ball trap!

I’ve seen other there with $30k guns and it really is no guarantee of success...yes, it’s a little bit nicer to load, less recoil, easier select trigger, sights a fraction faster, etc but you still have a dingleberry on the end pulling the trigger...
If I were to go again, I’d be looking at a sh escort, akkar, ATA, baikal and similar. If you get a decent sh unit, the depreciation has already happened, look after it at that stage and you might lose $100 over a year or two...If he’s still keen after 12 months - time to step it up.
