Post by bear foot bowhunter » 09 Mar 2018, 8:48 am

Hi guys i notised three of the parks on the r licence list are within 5-6 hours of where i live in qld . has anyone hunted them ? Is there any game there worth chasing ? Being closer to the brisban valley i suspect there is deer would that be right ? Im wondering if it would be worth my time getting a R hunting licece to hunt them or should i put my time into somthing else? Thanks heaps guys and gals for your replys

I'm thinking....there's one near Casino but not sure what's around in there or been to it but thought about it a few times. There should be the usual suspects - cats, foxes and dogs but as for dear, no idea....

Yeah, Mitch, can vouch for the foxes, dogs (big snarly ones too), cats and the odd pigs around the Kyogle area but haven't seen signs of deer. Could be around but haven't came across any....

I haven't been in there but I would suggest that there are feral dogs in that area. I'm over Kyogle/Casino way and there is feral dogs and foxes and cats there, so I don't see why these 3 pests wouldn't be around there too.
I haven't come across anyone that has actually hunted there but does the Forestry bods have any information?.

Not a whole lot of info on the website. There has been no reported pests killed in there. But that doesn't really mean anything. And in regards to the terrain, I've had a look on google earth and it looks like some pretty bloody thick bush

Yeah only got mine couple weeks ago. More than likely will hit up Girard at some stage. Even if I don't see anything still beats paying a few hundred bucks to go to one of the inland hunting properties I suppose.

All the forests near the border at the higher elevations have dense jungle almost unhuntable go for the lower elevation ones 200m or less

Yep, made that mistake too. Waste of time. Certainly would be deer in the vicinity but not in the designated hunting area. Lasted one day and drove home. Gotta go further near Tamworth for anything decent.
I'd rather be hunting

I thought that it's all closed off around the border due to the bushfire warnings and extreme fire situation.

So here's a question for people. I have a forest near one of my regular haunts that is basically like this - pretty much hilly rainforest with a crapload of vines. Driving through it, it's discouraged me so much I havent even tried because it looks like lines of sight would be measured single digit metres.

But, people have been hunting that sort of terrain pretty much from when they figured out how to stand on only two feet, so it must be doable. And I generally think, if there's anywhere so foul that no one in their right mind would want to go there, it might hold animals. Anyone got any pointers for scouting out really thick stuff?

Without being able to have a look at where you're talking about, I'd suggest google it and check out the ridges etc. The ridges might be a bit easier going. Also check for game trails to and from water points, open country, heading towards grazing/farmland etc. The gullies might be a bit too thick but in N.Z. reds are in very thick stuff, so look for game trails, bush tracks etc.
if there's good cover, semi/open clearings for grazing there may be deer there and pigs in the thick stuff, especially along the creeks.

Good hunting...
