12v fridge covers

Post by YoungBuck » 03 Aug 2018, 8:52 pm

I'll likely be purchasing a Waeco CFX40 in the coming weeks to stick in the back of the ranger, what's your opinion on the fridge covers they sell for an extra 2.5 slabs (~$100)? Additional insulation generally speaking is a good thing, but do they make enough of a difference to be worthwhile purchasing?

I think they are worth while. I put a cover on a 80 litre Waeco after I had it for a while. It definitely made a difference.

But I struggled to keep the power up to the 80 litre. I had a decent dual battery setup and a 120 watt solar panel. It was fine in the cooler months on longer trips if drove a fair bit.

Above 35 degrees. Forget about it.

The 40 litre will be much better on power.

My main tip is load the fridge and bring it all down temp before you leave on 240 volt power. Like the night before. Maybe even set slightly lower than you normal set point. The fridge will use heaps less power maintaining a temp than trying to pull a slab of warm beer down to temp.

Hi. The cover is worth getting. I'm not sure how much it helps directly to keeping the cool in, but it helps stop the outside of the cabinet heating up from direct/indirect sun, and the heating up the entire unit........ Also I'd rather the cover taking the brunt of bangs and scratches than the fridge itself. If your not in a hurry, wait a while and keep your eye out for sales. The price of the fridge rarely comes down but they regularly chuck in accessories worth a couple of hundred bucks including the cover.

Thanks all, ended up getting the unit from Anaconda today as they also have a sale on. With the cover came to the same price snowys have them going for.
Also picked up some other gear while I was there that was on sale.
