Scope For Ruger Precision Rimfire?

Post by FuzzyM » 15 Apr 2018, 3:38 pm

Good Afternoon All,
I currently have one of the new Ruger Precision Rimfire rifles on back order.
Debating what scope I will get for it.

I intend to use the rifle for casual target shooting, some rested, some offhand.
Also a little hunting.

Must haves are adjustable parallax and reliable operation, 3-9 zoom minimum.

I'm hoping to not spend much north of $500 minus rings.
Otherwise I will have to use a spare scope and save longer, but I am hoping I can cover my requirements in that price range.

I was originally planning on getting a Nikon Prostaff Traget EFR 3-9x40 at about $350.
http://www.nikonsportoptics.com/en/niko ... t-efr.html

Have also been looking at the last of the Leupold VX2 4-12x40 AO at about $500
https://www.leupold.com/scopes/compact- ... -4-12x40mm

I seriously considered a 2-7 hunting scope and a 10x fixed SWFA SS scope, but they are banned from being exported from Murica.

I scored one of those Nikon Prostaff EFR's on a second hand purchase a while back and was surprised at the quality given the price - Only drawbacks I could see are quite a large ocular housing and 1/4" clicks at 50 yards - No big deal on a general purpose rifle IMO.

Leupold have discontinued the VX2 3-9X33 EFR's but they were about the pick of the compacts - I have several and you still see the odd new one for sale occasionally:
https://www.leupold.com/scopes/rimfire- ... e-3-9x33mm

I've also owned these - Not common here in Aus but give little away to the Leupold and are offered with many options:
https://www.clearidgeoptics.com/ultra-rm-s/1814.htm

I like compact scopes on 22's so will let others comment on the higher power options.

Vortex have always done me well in the lower end of the price scale, my lithgow la101 .22lr has had a vortex diamondback on it for 3 or so years now, never had a problem

Another scope that may be worth considering is the Bushnell Rimfire series, in particular the 6-18x40. They can be found online from $195-$225, I've got 3 of them now on various 22's and can't fault them apart from maybe 6x being a bit too much zoom for quick short distance snap shots.

I was told when I placed thew order that they weren't expecting them till as late as September, so not too fussed.
If they lob in too early I will have to stick with one of my spare scopes anyway.

I was just going to put a Bushnell AR optics 4.5 X 18 on mine. But I reckon the Bushnell Rimfire series would be a good choice also.

I my local yesterday. Where I have order one. I'd heard a that some might landing early. He reckon he checked the Nioa site and we're still not showing any stock. Think I saw on Facebook that Halls now have them in stock also.

They actually do export to Australia now, but not via the website.

You need to email them and inquire, then pay through PayPal and send them the reference number.

I know its only a .22lr, but personally id be going for much bigger magnificatiin than 9 or 12 power on a platform like that....particularly if you are target shooting as well.
Id be going out to 18X at least....

And i find 6X to be plenty wide enough for a .22lr as its not the type of rifle to be knocking fast moving goats or pigs with at close range.
6x is also ok on close range bunnies if out spotlighting etc --you just have to remember to hold over if they are all blurry through the scope.

I ordered a hawke 4-12x40 ao with a fine cross hair reticle for now. If that doesn't suit I will upgrade down the track. Rifle isn't in yet either. Probably going to keep my savage mkii for hunting purposes.

Seen the new Vortex Diamondback tactical scopes? There’s a 4-16x44 for $550 and a 6-24x50 for $620. Both FFP and sound like good value, also the tactical look would suit the precision rimfire I think

Why would you want FFP on any precision rifle?

Hey FuzzyM, I know it's an old post, but how is the scope going? I have a 4-12x50 AO on order; couldn't find many reviews on it. Saw some great reviews for a different model hawke in 6-24. I'm getting the panorama.

I'm only posting because I was in the same boat, looking for a reasonable quality scope with parallax adjustment in 3-9x40 or 4-12x40. I found the leupold mark ar mod 1 4-12x40 AO. I got it for $760. The front objective is adjustable for parallax down to 25yards. It gets great reviews from the US (the AR crowd mostly). And, the clickers are mil dot and so is the reticle (why aren't they all moa/moa or mil/mil?) https://www.leupold.com/scopes/rifle-sc ... -4-12x40mm
