I have been using some inexpensive Swedish knives, because I have lost some expensive ones while hunting. Morakniv knives have been excellent and I now have several. Highly recommended.

I know it's not a traditional field type knife but this Cold Steel Scimitar Spike is my favourite.
It holds an edge well.

Anything made by the Swedes is normally very good and a cold steel hunter made my short list as well. Keep those recommendations coming fellas

There is nothing wrong with using a steel constantly while using it. In fact it is how it should be. People talk about how there knives hold an edge for an entire carcass and it might but it will have a better edge with constant steeling. A few strokes every few cuts is the go. The best knifes, looks aside are butchers boners and skinners.

I use Victorinox knives they're about the best for butchering all my boning ,skinning and slicing knives are Victorinox
another good older brand is Green River both these brands make various sizes and shapes which most likely would be good for
hunting purposes normally they are for the butchering trade

I've given up carrying the old Bowie - too flaming heavy and now just got a small folder and a boning knife.

Yep, angled boning knife makes easy work where most hunting knives can struggle. You'll need to make some kind of sheath for it which is wasy enough

Get a good smooth steel and hang it around your waist on a chain and use it every couple of minutes . Every time you pause give the knife a couple of strokes each side.. the knife will appreciate it . I don’t judge a knife on how long it will last without sharpening , rather how quickly it comes back under a steel.
And Bowie knives have no purpose unless you are fighting Mexicans .

Yep, let that fine edge bend right over without correction and you're giving yourself work you don't need. I put give my old 1940's vintage dinner knife a few of strokes on the steel every couple of meals. It's getting thin after 30+ years but it still works like new every time.

You only have to watch a butcher at work, they cut a bit, steel, cut a bit, steel. They know.

If you aren’t cutting you should be steeling.

Green river is a top knife for butchering, I also cut one down for skinning worked a treat. The high carbon in the green river is really good for holding an edge but one must clean and a light oiling after use. That's just my personal preference after working in the skinning room at a game meat abbitoirs for a few years roos, pigs and goat are pretty hard on the best of knives. On the other hand my brother uses a traditional Japanese tanto the steel is hard as nails but holds a razor-sharp edge. What ever you choose remove the factory edge, treat it well and it will serve you flawlessly.

OK, I had the bovine by the testes there.

I couldn't work out how PVC pipe was going to sharpen my knife.

Depends what I’m going after, if I’m out after Sambar I will take a knife roll such as Daddybang noted with a boning knife, skinner etc all purchased from butchering supply company for realistic prices ($20 to $30 each knife). Handiest knife I always have on me is a Gerber folding knife with replaceable scalpel type blade, best caping knife ever and just carry spare blades which are cheap then just replace when dull, no sharpening required ever.

Anyone here experienced Victory knives from NZ?

I have nothing but praise for mine
https://www.knifeshopaustralia.com.au/c ... knive.html

Broken down half a dozen deer with it this year and have only touched the steel a couple times, still sharp. I stick to the one knife for field dressing and a scalpel for intricate caping work.
Ive previously used Victorinox and Swibo but neither as good as this one.

At the moment I've been using a Fallkniven F1z in 3G steel. Works Perfectly for most of my field dressing needs and as my camp knife, I've also got a Fallkniven PHKz for skinning and such, as well as a Fallkniven F2z and an F4z for all my boning and filleting, Fallkniven are on the expensive side but the quality of the knives and also the steel make the purchases worth it to me, my logic buy once cry once. I've also been given a couple Bark River Knives from the states, and they're also awesome knives too and have used them with success I just love my Fallkniven's.

and probably buy a decent steel and good to go :friends:

That top one looks like a clone of Schrade's "Old Timer", if it's half as good as the original you should be pleased with it.
