Still having thoughts to rechamber to 204 but the other part of me doesnt want to molest a nice old rifle. Also has a pecar scope on it too.

Great calibre my Granddad use to rave about the 222 somewhat bit of a tribute to him and my English ties being a BSA and will mostly be ueeed for foxes and rabbits (much like Grandad) Miss the old boy he would have been 100 by the end of this year

Hi....now I'm showing my age....lol

A long long time ago this was my first centre fire....so what can I tell you ...

Accurate, built like a brick out house, one long action suited all, from 222 rem up to 30 06. From memory they were never chambered in "magnum" calibres. Stocks were good, better bedded, the old way. Magazine springs and followers in the smaller calibres were sometimes a problem, actually more fiddley cause of the length of the action and big magazine well.

Barrels ...good
Action...strong.
Extractor/ejector from memory is a plunger type, never played up but don't bust one...can't get em' these days for love or money, and the "smiths " that could make/modify from the old days are long gone....that's why mine is a single shot sentimental now.

Stocks were always of the Monte Carlo type with a two pack finish, tough as is an understatement.

Best mount because of the action length was the one piece hillver mount...definitely recommend that.

They were never worth big money, but by rule they shot well

I've had mine now for over 45 years, it eats anything and god only knows how many rounds have been through it before the ejector gave up the ghost, but we are talking well into 5k worth if not more.... still shots an inch at 100.

By the way they weigh a ton,,,,lol

Indestructible is the best way to put it

Hope that helps

Back when they were new there were two main choices, BSA or ParkerHale, Some made the right choice the others bought BSA's
The 222 is a great choice and is one of those calibres that will never disappear.unlike a lot of the recent "Latest and Greatest" cartridges.

I dont think they weigh too much then again i do walk around with a sako 85 varmint as a hunting rifle. So in comparison not too bad.

Hi Azza,
Ive never owned one so cant comment on the rifle, but i can say this...

I shoot a lot with a .204 in the field lately, used for a bunny fox outfit, & i love it...no hold over on a bunnies head at 200+m & it leaves a flap of skin...but its just a novelty fad im going through & ill get over it...my .222 obviously doesnt shoot that flat.

But id be very hesitant to suggest you get that old girl re-chambered in .204.

I love my .222 as a bunny/fox gun, & my suggestion would be give that old girl a good crack to see if it shoots.

If you need to re-barrel it, id suggest sticking with .222 for barrel life...

Let us know how it shoots...
Cheers

Ok so go the rifle down to the range last weekend got it all on paper shoots ok the old Pecar scope was stuck on 3 power so not too much help. Inch and a bit groups. I have placed a vortex 4x12 on it to have a play around with this weekend to see what it is capable of.

Cleaning of the rifle however unearthed some rather dissapointing results dont think the barrel had seen a patch since the late 90's and unfortunately exposed pitting in the barrel(close to the throat) nothing too bad but unwanted to say the least. See what she does this weekend and see if i can close the groups up. If they dont improve and the and it shoots worse with the minus 20 years worth of gunk out of the barrel she'll get a new barrel and for the record ill stick with the 222 absolute pleasure to shoot. Fingers crossed but if it needs a new barrel thats what she'll get.

There is not much difference in the price of the Top quality barrels they all are around the $700 mark and another $300 to fit. There are also a lot of what I would call second tier barrels that also cost this much. Then you drop down to factory barrels that are $300-$400.

So at the range today the groups were ok @ 100 however every now and then id get a oddball flyer and not in the way of being a inch but maybe two inches down or to a side. Pushed it out to 200 and things really started to open up. Im tossing up with the idea of a rebarrel. Will be used mostly as a hunting rifle most of these shots being within 100m however i like to have a ability if needed to shoot out past 200 if desired. Joy joy lol

Sooo, about $700 to have a replacement barrel fitted. I would just buy another rifle. If you shop around you can sometimes pick up a new 223 for under $750. That's if you're not fussy about Brand.

To tell you the truth id probably just put another barrel on the old girl nice timber smooth action i have a few cheap rifles and whislt they do the job they are a little rough round the edges. This ones safe with me i think she'll live.

You may be able just to set it back a bit. First I would get it bore scoped, then I would probably redo the crown that is easy. then if still problems run rechamber just move it up a half or an inch. You may find someone that is happy to do that for you for not much rather than a full time gunsmith. There are a lot of old do it yourselfers that have 50 years experience doing it for their own rifles and friends.

Looks like a big ejection port for a .222...collector1 was right...!

Another observation is the scope/rings look a pretty tight fit...
Its hard to tell from the pic, but make sure the rings have good clear contact with NO interference from the bell or ocular end of the scope...if there is any interference it wont be doing the groups or the scope any good...!!!

The other thing to consider is given the rifle is a class aged character being of blued/timber ethnicity, maybe its just too embarrassed to shoot straight while its being forced to wear silly looking silver rings... :sarcasm:

Scope is on lone from my Marlin stainless 17hmr hence the silly looking silver rings.

There is plenty of clearance with the scope also just the wangle of the dangle :drinks:

And after cleaning the other day the rear action screw was also a tad on the loose side. Seems to be my luck at the moment same problem with my howa. Was doing odd things much like the BSA. Another range trip this week to confirm.

great old rifle azza. there's one of these for sale on SSAA used guns at the moment.222 bsa's are like my model 70 222 i believe, where they put a spacer and small mag follower in a rifle based on a 308 sized action ? as for wait times on gunsmiths, patience is a virtue mate........ ;) i'll be interested to see how it shoots when you get it back. didn't shoot well with the original barrel mate ?

Lok it shot well at 100 i ended up winning a gpo scope conveniently that topped it out well i could shoot around a inch at 100 however at 200 id be lucky to hit a dinner plate. I want to use the rifle along side my 308 for hunting and want to be able to hit a tenis ball out to 200 so i thought id drop it off to Swan to put another barrel on the old girl. Sticking with the same profile and calibre. I dont mind waiting Allen does a good job hence why i dropped it offf to him. And the plus side with the ceracote I wont have to be so paranoid about the humidity and damp conditions.

that's a bit unusual for the group to open up that much at 200 isn't it ? i was thinking about rebarreling my mod 70, but used a borescope and the riflings sharp and bright with one pit in the rifling down towards the chamber. i'm gunna persevere and try a few more reloads to see how good i can group the original barrel. a new swan barrel does sound good but. yeh, blue and wood can need some looking after at times hey ? ceracote should take a bit of worry away. i just got my first stainless/synthetic the other week, sako A7 in 308. it'll probably be my do everything rifle, just hope my "super grade" mod 70 in 6.5x55 doesn't get jealous :D

The throat of the barrel was the worst part on mine a little pitted and washed out. I took my 223 out the other week and managed to put 8 shots into under a inch and had the same sort of groups when i took it out last but the chances of hitting the anything past 100 was a 50/50 with the 222. I look forward to seing what it will do when i get it back from Allen should be the goods for another 30 years

222 impresses me, my first batch of reloads with 40 gn vmax amazed the hell out of me. still working on a 50 gn load, it groups just on or under 1" at 100, but i know it's got more in it . it'll be worth the wait when ya get yours back. what are the triggers like on the BSA's ?

Trigger was a little heavy when i first picked up the rifle and little i mean heavy lol. Pulled it all apart and polished some of the mechanisms with 2000g wet and dry and is now sitting around the 2lb mark. I have some 40gr blitzking load that shoots around 1 inch @ 100 with a shot out barrel so will be keen to se how she does. Allen has decided id be best off going with a 1-12 twist barrel i like the 50s. I hope that ots done before the 6-8 week mark but honestly not too fussed. I have plenty of other rifles to toy with

i've considered 1-12 twist as well if i eventually rebarrel. i think 50-55 gn is more usefull, at the moment my 222 seems to prefer 40's. good old wet and dry, works wonders if you use it right hey  :drinks:
