Scope for Tikka T3x TAC A1 in 307WIN

Post by r.dunn » 17 Nov 2018, 8:44 pm

I need some advice on the right scope for my new rifle.

After some great advice in the Centrefire thread, I recently avoided disaster by purchasing a Remington 783...I’ve now “upgraded” to a Tikka T3x TAC A1 (.308WIN). I’m new to shooting (apart from 15+ years ago in the cadets), so looking to re-familiarise muelf with technique and aiming to hit the range for target shooting (no plan to hunt in the short/medium term). Distance will start close, and progressively move out as I get more confident/accurate (hopefully it won’t take too long). The ultimate goal is to consistently group at medium distancss, and consistently hit long-range targets.

Now for the advice: which scope?!

I’ve realised I need at least 25x zoom, and the bigger objective lenses for brightness at that magnification. I’m thinking 5-25x50 or even 5-25x56 is appropriate. My research suggests a FFP would suit my need. I’m hoping for MIL adjustments. Reticle wise, I want something more than basic Criss hairs, but nothing too tactical with lots of drop profile etc (i.e. I really don’t like Tremor). A simple ticked or dotted hair is all I need (I like the MIL-C).

I want a quality scope which will last a long time. I’m happy to spend $ if the scope I’m getting is worth it, but don’t really want to drop coin on features I won’t use.

I’ve found a few scopes which I’m considering.

- Leupold VX-3i LRP 8.5-25x50mm MIL for $1,645
- Nightforce ATACR - 5-25x56mm F1 for $3,875
- Vortex Viper HS-T 6-24x50 VMR-1 for $1,117
- Vortex Viper PSR 6-24x50 FFP for $1,455
- Zeiss Conquest V6 5-30x50 for $2,069

I appreciate reviews or thoughts!

I’m reasonably new as well and have researched a number of scopes for my intent which is different to yours.
That is quite a large window of budget...you are going to typically get responses from what people have / use. Looking through high end scopes can drive you crazy...was that one clearer? Don’t know - pass it back...yeah maybe,..not sure...even at rifle Rangers (where I attempted to befriend a few ppl) - you can look at what other people’s “settings” are which won’t be to your eye and this confuses the crap out of you. (If the shooter wears glasses, the scope settings will make the scope look poor to you - which is not fair as it’s going to have a setting that will work)
My advice would be to research as much as you can, learn about what all the acronyms mean, narrow it down to a couple and then try and find a lgs that will let you “play”...if your into the bigger end of your budget then the lgs should let you test drive a couple as they know your buying one.

Why do you want FFP and MIL clicks? These are the features some PRS shooters prefer. I find FFP a total pain but I never use my retical for ranging.

I also have a VX3 LR 8.5-25 but SFP and MOA. It is a great hunting scope. I have never used it in Competition but you would not be able to see your bullet holes at 500.

There is nothing wrong with the ATACR except the price. If you went SFP the BR 32x is an excellent scope for competition.

Why FFP?
25-power would negate the need for a spotting scope to about 200m, maybe 250m, but if I were shooting competition only I'd want more mag than 25-power. I use a cheap 10-40 sometimes for longer ranges.

What’s an Example of a “cheap” 10-40 scope??

Mine is a ZOS 10-40x50. I don't have it here and I don't seem to have any photos of it mounted.
I was very impressed with it though, before I decided to go with the Bushnell AR Optics on all my rifles, 10-power is way too high for general usage.
But 30mm tube and .125MoA adjustment is nice. I paid about $350 from memory a few years ago - beyond my Ebay history archive.

Thanks for that. I honestly didn’t think you could get anything “cheap” in that power range - clearly you can and clearly I was wrong. Cheers. (ps - please don’t show my wife I’ve admitted my failings here...she’d have a farkin field day)

I think like most technology it's expensive and hard to source when it's new, but it doesn't take long for it to trickle through to others, even cheap Chinese glass is pretty good these days compared to a few decades back.

I use an 80-power spotting scope that wasn't too expensive, under $200 I think a few years back - it does the job fine for seeing bullet holes in paper.
