Would you use an 80gr pill in a 270 (for velocitywhores)

Sooo, for those aren’t heavy pill-on-the-brain... and for 270 owners.

After checking a Bazzilion ballistics charts, there are two very flat shooting calibers that really stand out.

One of course is the 243 with a 55 grain pill going 4050fps. Has minimal drop out to 400 when sighted in at 200 yards. It’s almost impossible to beat in terms of trajectory.

The next closest I keep coming back to is a 270 with a 90grain pill, at 3600 FPS. Now I have a 270 and run those, it’s flat to 200 and absolutely wallops everything, including deer. But has a bit more drop out at 300 and 400, but is still manageable. There really is nothing like stupid velocities to bring something to a screaming halt, having used almost all pull weights, for shooting dogs with NV I want flat and fast.

Would any 270 owners consider trying a 75 or 80grain pill, some load development required, if I could get them made? I might know a guy, but to tool up might cost a bit. Not sure if they will be BT or flat base yet. But we’ll see. Just wondering if this might interest someone else?

No need to ask “why wouldn’t you use a 110 or 130”. Because I don’t. 90s are good in my vanguard.

Should be deadly on dogs, foxes and Hog deer etc...

What's the reason for wanting so much speed ?
They should be dynamite in close ie 100-250yds
I had 25-06 and went to 75gr but too touchy in the breeze 5-10 knot breeze would put them way off target
You can only but try and see probably big expense for little gain

What did your research say about a 204 Ruger shooting a 32 grain projectile? It should be neck and neck with the 243. The heavy hitter would be the 30/378 Weatherby or a RUM shooting 150 or 160 grain pills. They would be pretty flat out to 400.

Did you look at any of the fast 224s? I would have thought a 220 Swift or 22 Dasher would have featured in your quest to shoot flat to 400. they are pretty devastating on small game.

My LGS has Winchester ballistic silvertips in 55 gn in stock.Might have to take a pack to the block next Wednesday I went there today to work on the ute and it was being slashed. In 2 weeks it will be ready for foxing.Be interesting to see how accurate 55gn is in .243.I had never considered it to be a speed machine.I have a $700 HOWA so if it gets worn out it does not matter

Yeah behind 2206H its apparently 4050FPS. Zero'd at 200 yards it is ridiculously flat. Holding nearly 800 ft/lbs at 400yrds, makes it absolutely lethal.
I'm thinking after seeing all these wildcats, looking at all the options, 243 with a 55gr pill is really, really hard to beat. I wonder how fast/hard I could push a 270, or maybe a 26 inch barrel on a 243. Even the 25-06 or the 6mm-284 isn't any faster than a 243 with a 55gr pill. Funny how that works out. Please keep me posted of your results.

Just an update- I spent a lot of time mucking around with this, even considered swaging... however, I think the money will be better spent on simply getting a 6mm-06 on a long action receiver. Can’t argue with 4100fps with a 70gr vmax and up to 4500fps with a 55-65 gr pill. 1/14 twist. Who needs barrel life! I’ll get a 28in so I can set throat back as it wears. So who has a 6mm-06 reamer??? :D

I would suggest you just turn some brass bullets on the lathe and try them yourself.
But going so light drops BC, which reduces your range, and increases wind drift.

Yo Duncann61, how did the 55gr pills go in the 243W. and what did you try them on? Interested how it would perform on feral dogs. I'm currently using 75gr. HP. Speer.
