Fixed power Leupold M8 6 x 42

Post by TassieTiger » 21 Nov 2018, 7:06 pm

So after buying axouple Tascos, cheap knock off scopes...then moving up to a few better AR and master bushnells...I then stumbled across a Leupold bargain 6.5 x 20 I couldn’t turn down and ever since procuring that Leo I said I’d buy only good scopes moving forward.

So, an opportunity has arisen to acquire a very cheap Leupold M8x6 42 scope that is in pristine condition, with original box, instructions, etc.
Has anyone used one of these ? It would be going on a 30-06 for hunting larger game in heavy forest areas - so I’m thinking 150m range might be max...which is why I think a fixed power might suit?

I have 3 M8 6x on my 3 Brno mdl 2 22s....they are a brilliant scope for what they are....and suit the 22s well....
Before all the variable power scopes came on the scene, all we ever used was fixed power....i had a 6x40 gold crown on a 222 and shot huge amounts of foxes with it out to 300m or so....blokes i know used to run 4x scopes on their deer hunting rifles and had huge successes.....We are spoilt with what is available these days...
In answer to your question the M8 6x would be fine for your 30-06 ...if thats the way you want to go.....

And with those comments - bang.
It’s on its way...$150 sounds like a bargain to me.

Some of us still do run fixed powers. If we can find them ! Even when I've had high magnification variables they never went over 10x. Still managed to shoot stuff from a decent way off....

I personally wouldn't want to be stuck with a minimum of 8-power in heavy forest, might be too much for the closer shots.
Sounds like a great scope though.

Good point Pete :-)
Still more than I would want for snap-shooting though, 4-power is about max for me. Even my 4.5-powers are a little too much in my opinion when walking.

To be honest,I agree.
I tried hunting sambar years ago with a fixed 6x on my 308....it was ******. The old 4x is highly underrated imo

Yeah....my point exactly bigpete....I ran an 8x khales on a 17 mach 1V for years, lost count of the critters i took with it....I bought all my 6x on usedguns and from memory they were all around the $300 mark ea.....Can remember the first variable scope i bought and had it on a remington woodsmaster 30-06...it was a 2-7 Leupold and it was more time on 2x when i was in the bush than anything.....

The variables I use are all 3-9x and its very rare they are used above 5x in the field.
And even plinking /checkin zero I try to keep them low mag to replicate field shots  :drinks:

So Leo M8 Scope has turned up and now sits proudly on a steyr 06.

AM LOVING the eye relief on this scope and la k of weight - I’m no where near being scoped like I have been with a few others - think it’s about 4.5 inches relief...
It is true what many are saying about mAgnification with 6x, this is going to be a little difficult to manage - anything inside 50-60m is likely to be relatively safe unless time is on my side, but 50-200m (maybe a lil further) appears to be this scopes playground. Field view is a little tighter than I’d hoped but I’m liking what I’m seeing regardless. Beautiful optics and very fine reticle.

Trying to dial in was a learning experience - all my previous scopes were moa, this one is mil. So without knowing what I was doing, I had billets going farken everywhere.
It’s 3 inches left...1 full rotation should be right. Bang...s**t. 6 inches to right. So, halve that back the other way...crap - 2 inches movement. Whattttt theeee heck.

Oh thank you internet and connection. 3.25 inches per mil...right.
100m and shooting factory rounds to 1 inch...thank you, that will do me for now...now - where are the 06 dies for sale to tighten this up.

Edit. 1 day later, Took a few more shots
Whilst getting a load of wood - 4 inch group. What the heck??...closer inspection shows the cheap ass ring screws have backed off - suspect from the recoil - think I’ve just answered my own question re cheap rings...lol.
