I knew Ed hubel in the 2000's. I had one of the earlier 585 nyati based wildcats over at accuratereloading.com when the internet was starting out in the late 1990's. There were a few of us getting them done, a couple of Aussies, yanks and quite a few scandinavians suprisingly. At that point the 577 Trex was still the most powerful as it used a larger case head than the nyati designs, unless you went to a full 3.25" nyati case length( which bertrams came in as basic cylindrical) you couldn't get to trex capacity and I dont think anyone went that long as you were running into magazine length problems in big bore actions. I think a Nyati ran about 185 grains water capacity with 1.8" length to case mouth, the 3" versions about 200, the Trex always ran about 215-22grains. This also depended on the brass thickness. The short nyati would max out around 2550fps with 750 grain, mine would theoretically run about 2620 from a 25" barrel. The fastest I ever saw a Trex pushed live was by the americans Mitch carter and safari hunter Dan mcartney at about 2600fps but the trex still had gas in the tank. I think 2700fps would have been doable.

Then Ed hubel arrived in the early 2000's, his orginal calibres were 458's from memory on extra long basic brass, then he worked up everything from 585's to helping Rob garnick(inventor of the 600 overkill) with high pressure 12ga on BMG brass, then to 4 bore nitros on 20mm vulcan brass. I also corresponded with him when he was developing 10 bore loads from regular shotguns. That is pushing roundballs using original style brass cases to about 4000ftlbs energy like the old blackpowder 10 bore elephant guns. I think the powder was vihtavurori N110 and it kept pressures within shotgun levels (with strong shotguns) but dont quote me( or try this at home!).My memory is fuzzy but I seem to recall Ed's marketing figures for the 585 hubel were taken using a very long barrel.... I think I once asked him on the forums the actual case capacity to mouth and dont seem to think it was actually more than 577trex brass. I sold him a bunch of 585 cases and old 585 dies at one point and a few of us suggested he needed to select one of his big game cartridge , get it made into a nice safari gunand really market it. The monster franken-guns are interesting but most were prototypal and the average person would not be able to get them up and running.

Ed Here- Glad to be on this forum. My testing with 585 was with 28" barrel.
Got a 750 gr to 2800, It was a rough barrel, Vestals here in the states got
a 750 gr almost 2800 in a 22" good, fast barrel, The first 585 in AUS was
on a Ruger #1, It killed the first buff there done in by a 585 HE,
Bertram there has barrels of cases, I have cases here, and
there is a Bertram importer in Utah that get more here as needed,
There are about 60-70 guns world wide and guys doing more...Ed

What!! for great fun!!!..

The #1s are only 10-12 lbs..Most bolt guns about 3 more lbs.

And can be loaded down to hunting speeds, about 2500 good load,

I've tested it with nearly every powder ever made for rifles.,

One guy did single in a NEF, runs 650gr and lighter at 2400 max...Ed

I have a .585 Enfield made up by Ed. It weighs in at 18 lbs as I shoot pretty heavy powdercoated cast bullets one weighing 780 grain, and the other comes in at 1150 grains. Makes for world class recoil. Sorry tried to post a picture of my bullets to give you an idea but can't seem to do it.If you can help me post a picture, you all might get a kick in seeing what a 2 ounce plus bullet looks like. As I live in Hawaii and few dinosaur here, I use my .585 Hubel to shoot pigs as they run downhill. If you hit them right they cartwheel 8 feet in the air, great fun . Decades of tropical sun makes us a little screwy after a while, alas the price of living in paradise.

if you're using an iphone, try taking the photo in SQUARE mode - the resolution is inherently lower and thus likely to be under the attachment size limitations. otherwise you need to compress the image a bit more somehow - there's lots of ways to do this

Yep and here we also use 585 Minie bullets at high speed for deer, target and

exploding 15 gal water barrels... 540 gr over 3000 is explosive., and as long

as speed is way up there is no leading with hard alloy bullets.. Ed

Got guys doing various 416 HEs..

One just built a 416 HE, just been testing it a few days..

And using 168gr of HBMG 475 gr CEB, tested it, in good

conditions, 2 shots at 1800 yards and was within

a 1/4 of minute accuracy...A few shots at shorter ranges

had same accuracy. Ed..

And have 460 HSM specs figured out, the impetus for that is some
asking about one, and new, great line of 458 bullets CEB now has.
It will hold more powder than the 416 HSM.....Ed..

The guys that did the super accurate 416 HE did another
416 HE that has an 8" longer 42 inch K&P barrel..

Used a Stiller action and same load with 475 gr bullet, as in
first gun and and gained about 200 fps with good accuracy.
3065 fps. Tested 2 groups of 3 and less than 1/2 min moa.

And loads they used are not the highest speed loads
the cartridge is capable of....Here is print with specs for
the 416 HE reamer chamber ....Ed....
