Native hens?

Post by TassieTiger » 24 Nov 2018, 3:31 pm

Are they edible ?
THere are numerous where I go shooting and I’ve heard mixed reviews about the tableicity (yep- making that word up).

My grandfather told me to cook them with a brick for 90 mins in med temp - then throw out the bird and eat the brick.
My neighbour gave me a curry once, with apparent native hen and it melted in your mouth (suspiciously like slow cooked chicken) - so can those with experience please enlighten me? Should I take some of these birds or let them be??

Cheers.

Tas I proudly brought home a water hen when I got my first rifle at 13.

My Mum did her best but it was shocking, even the dogs wouldn't eat it.

Like strongly mud flavoured bungie cords.

But who knows mate, you might like it, after all people eat raw oysters. Nature's little living phlegm creatures. :wtf:

If it's the same bird that I'm thinking of, when I was a kid, my father got one or two and we tried too to eat them. Never did again.
But, try for yourself. you've got nothing to lose. Just have something else as standby.

Put up a good pic of one so we all know if we are talking about the same birds.

The ones I had experience with were (by memory, as I havnt seen any for years) mainly blue or bluish in color.
I shot one with an air rifle, and dear old Mom cooked it.
Havent got a clue now as to how or for how long,, but it did taste pretty good and was very tender.

Maybe I got a young one,, :unknown:
I do not fear death itself... Only its inopportune timing!
I've come to realize that,,,,, the two most loving, loyal, and trustworthy females in my entire life were both canines.

Spot on!! :drinks:
All native animals are protected including snakes etc(even some spiders and scorpions) and cannot be hunted/culled UNLESS you have the correct permits required in your state. Tas has a couple that aren't considered "native" (kookies etc) but ya really need to check !!!! :drinks:

Gaznazdiak: Yours was a Dusky Moorhen (Gallinula tenebrosa).

bigpete: Yours was a Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio)

Both would indeed be protected species.

We get the dusky moorhens around here on occasion.
Countless times I've seen a mob of MiniPigs running single-file through the brush, just got them in my sights, and realise they are chooks!

The statement "all native animals are protected" is a catch all that is not quite accurate. It varies fro m state to state, but as an example, here in SA there are several native birds that are not protected.

https://www.environment.sa.gov.au/manag ... ve-animals

Always check the regulations in your own state, and keep in mind that they are subject to change

Ok so theres a dozen unprotected natives in sa out of the 100's of species so I'll change my comment to "the vaaaaaassssstttt majority of Australian natives are protected!
 :drinks:
Either way as has been said ya really need to make sure of the animals status before ya shoot!

We get thousands of purple swamp hens up here we call them water cootes ''bush name'' farmers used to get permits to cull them as they devastate
the crops I think a permit can still be obtained for culling
But to eat one fek me I have eaten almost everything that can be eaten bar a few but wouldn't eat a coote they stink so bad and when they
nest in the sugar cane and you walk through you get covered in lice not good when you're cutting plants for planting
Tassie try something else to eat maybe a crow they're not bad

I have had to "eat crow" on several occasions.
But only in the figurative, never the literal
