It may seem to be a silly question, but, why the need to shoot Bismuth out of your muzzle-loader?
It's quite reasonable to say that since the advent of muzzle-loading firearms, they used lead, as do most modern day shooters.
Is it a personal desire, or is there some other reason that we are unaware of?

Because it's illegal to use lead for duck shooting ? Thought that was pretty much applicable throughout Australia

dont quote me but it may be worth your while ringing the delwp as I think you may be legal with lead shot in a muzzle loader
I'm not 100% sure of it but I did hear it years ago for victoria, may be worth looking into :unknown:
what was said to me was that if you wanted to use a damascus twist steel barrel you could use lead instead of steel legally
it was a very reliable source that told me :unknown: may be ****** but it's worth a phone call

I did hear a few years ago and like some laws they just get forgotten about after time, may be worth a ring if you get onto the right person :unknown:

as far as using bismuth goes IMO it is like hitting the ducks with thor's hammer way better than lead just very expensive
I have heard of blokes getting together to buy it in together so the cost isn't so much for postage

Steel in a shot cup, or use the copper-plated BB's made for air-rifles?

Nice find Gaz.
US$150 for 4.5kg, and US$80 shipping.
About A$320 delivered, or A$70/kg - $2 per one-ounce load.
Outrageous still, but not out of the question :-)

Well, the one-pound bag is US$41.50 delivered, only gives you fifteen or sixteen one-ounce loads for A$60. Which is virtually the same as buying the ammunition here and dumping the shot out.

Definitely no steel, shot up or not,in my antique. And from what I've read the copper plated bbs are hard as steel shot anyway

I don't know how much more complicated it is to make bismuth shot, but if it's like lead shot it'll be around the same price for the raw material as the shot costs.

Personally, I'd keep buying firearms until you find one that works...and then keep buying more of them!
